Player Summary:
Mayfield is an experienced 4 plus year starter at positions LCB and RCB on a TXSN defense. Has the size of an average NFL corner. Plays consistently unrattled against any level of competition. Displays a competitive nature playing with high energy, motor competes for the ball against WR. Playing style is more raw than technical, a scrappy corner. His field awareness is a plus in the secondary, showing alertness and awareness of positioning on the field as well as the location of the play. Athleticism at times overshadows the fluidity of backpedaling-he is able to still be in position at the initial stem of the route and through the maturity of the WR route. Playing man technique is decent, using his hands appropriately at the LOS and plays physically enough during the progression to make the formation of the route by WR uneasy. Does a good job mirroring the WR off the LOS has a tendency of allowing weight to be on the back of feet instead of the front of feet. Hand checks WR during the progression of WR route enough to be effective and timely. Has the ability to have constant feet movement to wait on WR to be mirrored at times displays dead feet at LOS but adjusts man technique and coverage through athleticism. In zone, tends to drift in coverage playing with high leverage, especially when play is developed on the other side of the field. Has above-average close in speed when he sticks and breaks in route either in zone or man coverage. Does not turn his hips much, keeping the WR in front implementing more athleticism than technique. His eyes are a little heavy in the backfield although not enough to get lost in coverage, keeping his man in front of him. Not a grabby corner which allows WR to develop the route, giving him time to adjust if needed, giving a hand check on the hip of WR. A good run supporter. Keeps low outside leverage with good body awareness, positioning the backside to the boundary and allowing the pursuit of defense to make the stop. Below-average shedding block allows the blocker to control the block with hands and physical control. Gives the effort to effectuate defensive run support in pursuit of the ball carrier. An active high motor CB.
Scheme Fit:
Man, Off-Man, Zone Coverage
Power Statement:
A scrappy, highly competitive average-size corner. Has a rawness with the ability to increase the development of consistent sound DB technique. Possesses the needed confidence for a CB. Feet reaction is above-average when sticking and breaking on the route. Also uses quick change of direction, a much-needed skill set for an effective CB. Eyes have a tendency to be in the backfield longer than needed while in coverage. His athleticism successfully compensates for marginal technique errors while in coverage. Plays with confidence and intensity.
