NFL Draft Diamonds Scouting Report: Tua Tagovailoa, QB, University of Alabama

Alabama QB Tua Tagovailoa is a sure fire first round pick, but is he the best player in the NFL Draft?

NFL Draft Diamonds newest addition Bryan Ault has joined our scouting team and he put together this quick scouting report on Alabama QB Tua Tagovailoa.

  • Name: Tua Tagovailoa
  • College: Alabama
  • Class Year: 2021
  • Height: 6’1”
  • Weight: 218

Report: Productive sophomore season: threw 245/355 for 3,966 yards and 43 touchdowns.

Strengths: High potential, left-handed and mobile QB with an instinctive feel for pressure and an NFL arm.  Has good footwork, velocity on short throws and can fit the ball into tight windows.  Good escapability, pocket mobility, and accuracy in the short game.  Hits short-game routes and hash-to-numbers throws in stride and can hit deep fades down the sideline.  Is very physically strong and difficult to bring down.  Is primarily a pocket QB but is also a decent runner – can elude rushers and make things happen on the move.  Started as a sophomore, has time to fix his flaws and should improve over the next couple of years.

Improvements: Very streaky accuracy.  Frequently overthrows intermediate passes, lacks touch, and takes sacks when he needs to throw it away and live to play another down.  Struggled at times when under duress, especially vs. Alabama (INT in 2nd Q, 6:45, and 3rd Q, 6:43).  Check progress during junior season.
