Positives: Has adequate height & okay arm length. Plays with a good motor, competitiveness, and second effort. Can line up as a 4i-technique or6i-technique standing up, or with his hand in the ground. The first step off the LOS is good, can get by an OT with quickness & a hesitation move through the B-gap, or with leverage around the corner. Relies on quick hands & a rip move to disengage from an OT. Uses a spin move to disengage when giving the second effort. Brings the QB down with good wrap-up technique. Shows some ability to guard the TE in man coverage to the flats. Can stay parallel to
Negatives: Has a slightly undersized frame for a DE despite his height & length. Tends to rely on a rip move on most plays to disengage. Does not show
Summary: A heavy participant as a DE/OLB from 2015-2018 for head coach Mike Jacobs after redshirting in 2014. Ellis is a defensive player that can cause disruption in passing situations with his quickness off the LOS & quick hands, despite not showing much of a variety of pass rush moves. He needs to show that he can disengage from an OT with a bigger arsenal of moves, prove that he can be reliable against runs to the outside, and guard the TE consistently. He can be serviceable for a team as a DE in a 3-4 scheme, and/or as a pass rusher in 3rddown & long situations.
