Positives: Adequate arm length, plays with decent foot speed at the snap, shows adequate mental processing to find the ball. Uses good lateral quickness to pursue the ball on tosses & sweeps, relies on hands & quickness to move through traffic while in pursuit. Is a quick blitzer through the A-gap & B-gap against HB dives & off-tackle runs, tends to primarily rush the QB off the edge, relies on quickness & a rip move to disengage & beat blockers, tackles the ball carrier with good wrap-up ability. Shows good ability & discipline in zone coverage, breaks on the ball well against slants & crosses in his coverage assignments.
Negatives: Is undersized & has a compact frame for a LB, can over pursue & hesitate at times while finding the ball against counter runs. Tends to keep a high pad level & doesn’t show much play strength when engaged with blockers, has a bad habit of false stepping when breaking on the ball in zone coverage. Ability to cover HBs, Slot WR, and TEs in man coverage is a question.
Summary: A four-year participant for former head coach Steven Aycock & current head coach Kermit Blount & defensive coordinator James Lott. Toran was used on the edge & in the middle as an MLB in the Bulls’ 4-2-5 defensive scheme. Is an MLB that uses quickness & hands to pursue the ball, but needs to show that he can play with a lower pad level & more strength. Will need to add weight to his frame to increase his chances of playing LB at the next level, or demonstrate that he has skills where he could transition to playing SS. Will fit with a team with a defensive scheme that utilizes 4-2-5 & zone coverage concepts. Could develop into a serviceable player.
