Formations Fantasy Football Review: Carolina Panthers Edition

The Carolina Panthers enjoyed a trip to the playoffs last season before being knocked out by the 49ers. This year’s roster, especially its WRs, look a lot different than the players from the playoff team. Who is worth a draft for your team this year?

Star: Kelvin Benjamin (WR)

13 Stats: N/A

Why He’s a Star: Well, somebody has to catch what Cam Newton is throwing. Greg Olsen and Jerricho Cotchery are other options, but the rookie that provides a large target is poised to make a difference in the Panthers offense. Look for Benjamin to start out as a flex player and potentially emerge as a solid WR3.

Avoid: Jonathan Stewart (RB)

13 Stats: 48 carries-180 yards

Why to Avoid: Stewart has been injured frequently and has an uphill battle in becoming relevant in fantasy. Even if Stewart stays healthy, he shares a backfield with DeAngelo Williams and Mike Tolbert. It is wise to avoid all of the Carolina running backs!

Sleeper: Jason Avant (WR)

Why He’s A Sleeper: As was mentioned earlier, Cam Newton has to throw to somebody. Jason Avant always seemed to pop up in Philadelphia’s offense. Even though Avant has never had more than 700 yards in a season, he could top that in Carolina’s scheme. Avant is worth a late-round pickup.

IDP to Watch: Thomas Davis (LB)

13 Stats: 85 tackles, 38 assists, 4 sacks, 2 interceptions

Why: Thomas Davis has survived injury after injury to become one of the best IDP players in the NFL. He has put up over 100 tackles the past two seasons and should have another successful year playing next to Luke Kuechly.
