49ers wanted Adam Gase as their head coach, but he was unsure about keeping Jim Tomsula
The San Francisco 49ers really wanted Adam Gase as their head coach. The former Denver Broncos offensive coordinator was hoping to land the Niners head coaching gig, but fell short when he was asked to keep Jim Tomsula as his defensive coordinator. Jim Tomsula was eventually named the head coach, and Gase moved on and went elsewhere but this is pretty interesting.

NFL source: 49ers almost offered him the HC job but also told Gase they wanted Jim Tomsula as his DC. Gase wasn’t sure about that. No offer.
The Niners have a lot of faith in Tomsula, and they may have made the best decision to keep someone in house that the players respect.
