NFL Draft Grades – What team did the best?

Arizona Cardinals – B+ – The Cardinals first round pick of Deone Bucannon gives them a physical presence at safety. His range and hitting ability will be a huge impact in the Card’s secondary. Their fifth round selection of Virginia Tech QB Logan Thomas was a head sctratcher though. With prospects such as Murray, Boyd and Mccarron still on the board, this selection left a lot to be desired.

Atlanta Falcons – B+ – The Falcons gained size and strength on their roster with the addition of Texas A&M OT Jake Matthews and Minnesota DE Ra’Shede Hageman. The Selection of Matthews brings instead bodyguard protection for Matty Ice and help revamp the running game.

Baltimore Ravens – B- -Baltimore went defense with the selection of Alabama’s C.J. Mosley. Not a bad pick but the running game suffered last year and o-line help was a dire need for them. Ravens fans were hoping to see the cavalry come at the interior line positions.

Buffalo Bills – C – The Bills selected arguably the draft’s top player in Sammy Watkins, but failed to execute after first round pick. It’s great getting EJ additional weapons at the WR position but without solid o-line help, he will just be on his back for the 2014 season. To make matters worse, the Bills traded their 2015 first round pick to move up for Watkins.

Carolina Panthers – D – Carolina had arguably the worst draft of any team. You lose your top 3 starting wideouts last year and all you do to replace that is draft ONE Wr. Florida State WR Kelvin Benjamin seemed a bit odd at the end of the first round. I would loved to see them trade up to go after Sammy Watkins. They did a poor job of going out and getting Cam some new receiving toys to play with.

Chicago Bears – A – The Bears killed the draft with selections of Virginia Tech CB Kyle Fuller, LSU DT Ego Ferguson, Arizona State DT Will Sutton, and Arizona RB Ka’Reem Carey. Carey, a fourth round pick, has true game speed and could be a difference maker in the Bears offensive attack.

Cincinnati Bengals – B – The Bengals had a phenomenal first round selection in Michigan State CB Darqueze Dennard. He will be an impact player immediately. LSU RB Jeremey Hill in the second round is a head scratcher, but they made up for it with West Virginia pass-rusher WIll Clarke in the third round.

Cleveland Browns – B+ – The Cleveland Browns produced the most hype with their Johnny Manziel selection. In the second round, however, the Browns should have went wide-receiver with the Josh Gordon suspension looming.

Dallas Cowboys – C+ – The only reason why I didn’t give the Boys a D because Jerry resisted and didn’t draft Johnny Football with the 16th pick (small victory). Jerry Jones had a very average draft with first round selections of Notre Dame OL Zack Martin and Boise State DE Demarcus Lawrence. They finished last year with historically the worse defense in nfl history and how do they respond? By spending three 7 round draft picks on defensive players . Shaking my head.

Denver Broncos – B- – Bradley Roby, Denver’s first round selection, brings athleticism, but he still needs a lot of work at the cornerback position. Indiana WR Cody Lattimer is a under-the-radar prospect who will excel in Denver’s offense.

Detroit Lions – B+ – Matthew Stafford was smiling ear-to-ear after the Lions took UNC TE Eric Ebron in the first round. Ebron will be an elite pass catching tight end at the next level. That will also open up passing lanes and loosen up coverage down field for Megatron. BYU linebacker Kyle Van Noy, a second round selection, is a needed boost to the Detroit’s defense.

Green Bay Packers – B – Like we’ve seen before, the Packers had a solid draft that included picks of Alabama S Haha Clinton-Dix, Fresno State WR Davante Adams, and Cal TE Richard Rogers.

Houston Texans – A- – Nothing but good results from the Texans …in the first round. Houston picked up the drafts top prospect in Jadeveon Clowney but haad a chance to trade up back into the first round and get Teddy Bridgewater. But they got complacent and didn’t pull the tigger. UCLA OG Xavier Su’o-Filo, who was considered by many the top guard in this year’s draft.

Indianapolis Colts – C- – The Colts lost their first round pick when they traded for Cleveland’s Trent Richardson. In the second and third round, Indianapolis drafted OSU OL Jake Mewhort and Ole Miss WR Donte Moncrief. The former Rebel will give Andrew Luck a big, physical target down the road.

Jacksonville Jaguars – A – The Jaguars now have their franchise QB in UCF’s Blake Bortles and two of his future goto receivers in USC’s Marqise Lee and Penn State’s Allen Robinson. The Jags had a very successful draft.

Kansas City Chiefs – B – Kansas City’s first round selection of Auburn DE Dee Ford may not have been an area of need but he gives crucial depth to the front 4 that struggled with injuries last year. They did, however, impress with the late round selection of Georgia Qb Aaron Murray. He just may be the starter in 2015. Stay tuned on the Alex Smith contract situation.

Miami Dolphins – C+ – The Dolphins took LSU WR Jarvis Landry too high in the second round. They bulked up their offensive line with the addition of Tennessee OL Ju’Wuan James and North Dakota State OG Billy Turner. This will really help in the maturation and development of Ryan Tannehill

Minnesota Vikings – A – A late trade to take Louisville signal caller Teddy Bridgewater in the first round was an intelligent move. The Vikings also increased their speed at linebacker with an early first round selection of UCLA’s Anthony Barr.

New England Patriots – B – You can never question what the Patriots do. This year, New England took injury-prone DT Dominique Easley from Florida and Eastern Illinois QB Jimmy Garoppolo in the second round to back up Tom Brady.

New Orleans Saints – B+ – The Saints made a terrific selection in Nebraska CB Stanley Jean-Baptiste. At 6-foot-3, Jean-Baptiste will bring quality size to the outside. Oregon State WR Brandin Cooks is a solid first round selection, but I’m not completely sold on his abilities.

New York Giants – B – LSU WR Odell Beckham is a playmaker, but was it worth a 12th overall pick? Syracuse DT Jay Bromley and Colorado State C Weston Richburg are day two selections that give the Giants more size upfront.

Oakland Raiders – B+ – Perhaps the best pick of the draft, Oakland took Buffalo DE Khalil Mack with the fifth overall pick. He will be a force at the next level.

Philadelphia Eagles – C+ – While they impressed with first round selection of Lousiville DE Marcus Smith, their second round pick up of Vandy WR Jordan Matthews had me wondering. But I’m sure Chip Kelly will find a way to use his new offensive weapon

Pittsburgh Steelers – B – Another team that traditionally does well on draft day, the Steelers played solid selections in the first two rounds with OSU LB Ryan Shazier and Notre Dame DE Stephon Tuitt.

St. Louis Rams – A – The Rams are slowly putting together a fierce o-line and d-line. Without a doubt, the Rams dominated this year’s draft. Auburn OL Greg Robinson and Pittsburgh DT Aaron Donald were the best two players at their position. Auburn RB Tre Mason and Florida State CB Lamarcus Joyner are day two picks that will fight for playing time right away.

San Diego Chargers – B- – They addressed a need with the selection of TCU DB Jason Verett, but they didn’t turn any heads with their picks.

San Francisco 49ers – B+ – Drafting NIU defensive back Jimmer Ward was hands down one of the better picks in the first round. If the niners had any weakness last year, it was there secondary. This pick and to go along with last years first round pick in Reid, their quietly developing a nice secondary.

Seattle Seahawks – B – The Super Bowl Champs were without a first round pick, but the added Colorado WR Paul Richardson and Missouri OL Justin Britt in round two and three, respectively. Not flashy selections, but they could develop into prime time players for Coach Pete Carroll.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers – A – I really like how the Buccaneers went out and totally revamped their receiving game. Texas A&M WR Mike Evans and Washington TE Austin Seferian-Jenkins were some of the best available prospects at their position.

Tennessee Titans – C – Outside of Michigan OT Taylor Lewan, it’s hard to see anything the Titans did that truly made an impact. May be another tough year down in Nashville.

Washington Redskins – C+ – The ‘Skins didn’t have a first round pick, but the added a beast in Stanford LB Trent Murphy. Many will question the Murphy selection, but I believe it will pay off with his intelligence and passion for the game.
