KevinDraft Diamonds Prospect Interview: Kevin Van Voris, K, West Texas A&M University
How many teams were recruiting you out of high school?
-I was recruited from plenty of D1 schools but the reason I decided to not play football straight out of college was because I wanted to play soccer instead of football. Soccer was more important at the time and I felt that I should pursue soccer instead of football. Looking back at my decision now, I should have played football out of highschool.
Where did you choose and why?
-I played soccer at the top Community College in the US at the time which was Barton County CC, I chose this school because I messed around my senior year and did not do well in my classes, so playing juco soccer was my only optiion.
What were your goals for your senior year?
-I wanted to be 1st team punter in the Lone Star Conference, All-American punter, have the most touchbacks for kickoffs, and just be the best specialist that I could be.
Have any scouts met with you, and if so what are they saying?
-I have talked to the Bears at the regional combine and they said they were interested in my leg.
At your position, what separates you from the others?
-Being a kicker/punter, I have no room for error because everything that I do is criticized either in a good way or a bad way.
Tell us what you look for when breaking down film?
-I tend to focus on my technique, i can always improve my technique.
If you could compare your play to one person in the NFL who would it be?
-I would say that I am a mix between Janikowski and Prater because of how much power those two kickers have.
What was the biggest obstacle in your life you had to overcome, and how did you overcome it?
-When I was 18 I lost the desire to want to be the best at anything that I did. I played juco college soccer and after that season I dropped out of college. I worked in the “real world” for a few years and one day it hit me. I didnt want to be average anymore, I was sick and tired of wasting my talent and more importantly my life. I sent my highschool film to West Texas A&M University, they gave me a chance and now I am looking at being drafted. More importantly I have my college degree.
What is your biggest strength?
-My leg power.
What is your biggest weakness?
-Never being good enough.
If I were a GM and gave you a second to sell yourself, what would you say?
-Not one person in the NFL will out work me.
Growing up, who was your role model?
-Tupac, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Steve Prefontaine, I have a few more but its anyone who came from nothing and made themselves into being great.
Who was your favorite team and player in the NFL and why?
-Janikowski because I can relate to how he kicks, the Broncos are my favorite team because they are always united and play like a family with pride.
What was the most tragic event that ever happened in your life and how did you overcome it?
-That is a hard question because there are a few things that have happened, I would say the passing of my Dad when I was very little. He was involved in a car accident when I was 6 and I was suppose to go to work with him that morning but my mom told me I couldn’t go. Its something I will never overcome but it always reminds me to give everything I have when pursuing anything because you never know how long you have on this planet.
If you were to have dinner with three people dead or alive who would it be?
-My grandpa, my dad, and one of my best friends who was murdered Jose Diaz.
With your first paycheck what would you buy?
-An engagement ring for my wonderful girlfriend who has supported me so much in everything I do
