Draft Diamonds Prospect Interview: Gregory Beauduy, LB, Carson Newman

Greg Beauduy is an under the radar player who is super talented and was a freak of a player coming out of high school Deerfield Beach in Florida.  Beauduy is a very high motored player that already has 32 tackles on the season, a sack, an interception a forced fumble and is a force to be reckon with.  He could easily play Safety because the kid has great speed. I think he will be converted to Safety at the next level, but the kid never shies away from contact.  He is a very sound tackler and is a true student of the game. I think Beauduy could be a steal for a team that needs a solid defender.

 

How many teams were recruiting you out of high school?

There were several schools who actively recruited me out of high school including Kansas State University, University of Wisconsin, East Illinois University, Marshall University, and University of Massachusetts and a couple others.

Where did you choose and why?
Out of high school I enrolled in a junior college, Reedley Community College, in Reedley, California. I chose Reedley Community College because at that time I had not been very well informed about the recruiting process and as a result, missed the opportunity to attend the school I was most interested in. Reedley appealed to me because it gave me the opportunity to move out of my hometown and experience a new community while still working on my athletic career.

What are your goals for your senior year?

My primary goal for my senior year is to graduate, which will make me the first person in my family to graduate from college. I am also striving to win the NCAA D2 championship and leave a legacy behind when I leave. I plan to take advantage of every opportunity I have to make the last year of my college experience worthwhile and significant.

Have any scouts met with you, and if so what are they saying?
I have not met with any scouts at this point.

At your position, what separates you from the others?

My coverage ability is one attribute that separates me from others who play my position, just being able to recognize routes and cover slot receivers as well as tight ends and challenge them vertically up the field. My versatility in a defensive scheme is a plus just being able to play the middle backer in a dime look and nickel also being able to play the nickel backer itself.

Tell us what you look for when breaking down film?

When breaking down film I look for down and distance. I also focus on offensive tendencies and formations as well as how frequently the offense is running plays and out of what formations. I even look for any gestures the quarterback may make to signal a route or play. I look for these specific parts of the film to get an edge on my opponent. Seeing these things helps you be aware of what offenses will be throwing at you and it just prepares you for what to come.

Who was the toughest player you have ever faced?

Eugene Smith QB for the New York Jets and Giovanni Bernard RB for the Cincinnati Bengals are arguably the two best players I have faced. In high school their game was just on another level they made it look so easy that’s probably why they are both currently starters in the NFL.

If you could compare your play to one person in the NFL who would it be?
Lavonte David. I say this because he is a bit undersized as a linebacker and so am I but he uses his speed, size, and quickness to his advantage to get sideline to sideline and cover in space.

What was the biggest obstacle in your life you had to overcome, and how did you overcome it?

While I was growing up, my mom was using drugs and was in and out of prison. Because of this, she was not really in my life at all. This lack of support was the biggest obstacle I had to overcome. My mom was never able to make it to any of my high school or college games, so she had never seen me play. Football was my therapy. I could use football to get away from all the negative things in my life and I knew that one day if I was blessed to play this game long enough she would be able to come and watch me play and be proud of her son.

What system fits your style of play the best?
4-3 defenses.

What is your biggest strength?
Recognizing routes and playing in space. What makes me good at this is I actually played SS at my JUCO in Reedley, California

What is your biggest weakness?
Feet dying on contact. I also struggle with thinking too much and being indecisive. This hurt my game in a way where I’m always leaving my feet to make a tackle which leads to me having missed tackles and me being indecisive makes me play a step slower.

If I were a GM and gave you a second to sell yourself, what would you say?
I am a hard working, passionate man and I love what I do. I would put everything I had into becoming a positive component of your team.

Growing up, who was your role model?
My granddad, Eddie Carter, was my role model.  Although he is not my biological grandfather, he raised and loved me and my other siblings as if we were one of his own.

Who was your favorite team and player in the NFL and why?
The Green Bay Packers are my favorite team in the NFL, and Nick Collins was my favorite player. Nick Collins also came from a small school but that never stopped him from competing and reaching his goals. He expressed his passion for the game and played for all the right reasons. Unfortunately, his career is now over but he will always be one of my favorite players.

What was the most tragic event that ever happened in your life and how did you overcome it?

My seventh birthday. My family and I were on our way home to pick up my mom to go to Chuck-E-Cheese to celebrate my birthday. As we approached the house, the police were pulling in behind us. I ran inside to find her, but the police came into the house and arrested her. Overcoming that came easy to me, I simply chose to love her and just continued to love her day after day.

If you were to have dinner with three people dead or alive who would it be?

I’d have dinner with my mom, my dad’s mom and my granddad. I choose these three people because I feel they played a major role in my life and made me who I am today. Plus they are all interesting characters.

With your first paycheck what would you buy?

With my first paycheck, I would purchase dental insurance for my grandma. I say this because I feel as if my grandma is the only one who truly believes in me and without her where would I be? She also asked me before I left for school my senior year She said, “baby when you make it pro you gone grandma teeth fix” I said it’ll be the first thing I do”.
