NFL Draft Diamonds Prospect Interview: Charlie Callinan, WR, Boston College

What is your name?

  • Charlie Callinan.

Where did you play College Football?

  • Boston College.

What position do you play?

  • WR.

What is your height/weight?

  • 6’4″ 235lbs.

Did you play any other sports growing up? If so, what were they?

  • I did play Basketball Freshman & Sophomore year. After that, I really wanted to focus on Football.

Who is the toughest player you have competed against in College?

  • I would have to say Florida State DB Jalen Ramsey. He is a great player. He is an unbelievable player. Good mix of speed & size, we had some good battles.

Are you listening to music before a game? If so, what?

  • I am big into music. I do not have a personal favorite genre. I like all music, anything from rap to country to rock. I will even throw in a little classical music to cool off if I am getting too hype. I play a little guitar too.

Do you have any superstitions before a game? If so, what are they?

  • I always have spaghetti with maple syrup on it before a game. The WR group would hang out together the night before a game & just hang out.

Who is your role model & why?

  • My father. He worked as a sales-man & was always traveling to provide for our family. My high school head coach Rich Hansen (St. Peter’s Prep). He is an unbelievable person. He truly cares about everyone he coaches.

While in College, what has been your favorite & least favorite class?

  • My favorite class was Business of Sports. My least favorite class was the first year Writing Seminar class. I am not much a writing person.

Outside of Football, what has been your favorite experience while in College?

  • Just being in Boston. Experiencing the culture around the city. It is mind-blowing how people care for the city & their sports programs.

Growing up, who was your favorite NFL Team & NFL player, & why?

  • Being born in Cleveland, I have always been a big Browns fan. I was a big fan of Kellen Winslow. I always like him a lot; I liked the way he played. I also like Jordy Nelson a lot.

If you could be in any movie of your choice, what would it be & what character would you play? 

  • Gladiator. Just to be there during that period would be cool. Fighting alongside Maximus would be awesome.

If you could have dinner with three (3) people, dead or alive, who are they? 

  • Jim Thome, my Grandfather, Will Ferrell.

Who is your favorite superhero & why?

  • I do not particularly have one, but I love The Dark Knight Franchise. I would also say Wonder Woman. I think Gal Gadot (Diana) is beautiful.

What is your definition of hard work?

  • Giving relentless effort in whatever you put your mind to. Not stopping until you reach your goal. Having the innate ability to attack anything with your best effort where you do not have any regrets.

What is the most unexpected lesson you learned while in College?

  • I learned a lot about leadership. I became a captain senior year, which was a huge honor for me. I learned a lot from the other people around me. I learned how to handle different situations.

Which would you prefer, three (3) wishes over five (5) years or one (1) wish right now? 

  • I would pick three wishes over five years.

What is something you wish you could go back & tell yourself as a High School Freshman?

  • Honestly, I would probably tell myself to not be as much of an introvert as I was. Go out there & talk to people.

Why do you wear #83?

  • I was given the number by BC. Previously worn by Alex Amidon. He was who I looked up to. He took me under his wing when I got to BC. Instead of pursuing the NFL, he actually became a Navy SEAL.

You got your bachelor’s degree in finance & marketing, what made you choose to pursue those subjects?

  • I never thought I would get into something like that. At the time I came to BC, it was the #3 Business school in the country. I decided I was not going to pass up the opportunity to get a great education.

What is the best part of your hometown, Westfield, N.J.?

  • Bagel Chateau. You will never have a better breakfast sandwich then there. It’s the perfect excuse to come visit Westfield.

You suffered a foot injury in September 2017 that forced you to miss some time. Do you think this made you stronger as both a player & a person having to deal with that adversity?

  • It really did. It really tested me. I was coming off the best game of my career. Everything was clicking. I was happy with how I played. I got hurt & could not even travel the next game. It was heartbreaking. It really tested my strength & will to push myself. With the help of my teammates & trainers at BC I was able to come back.
