Chargers cut CB Richard Marshall after his lackluster performance covering Emmanuel Sanders

richardToday the San Diego Chargers released cornerback Richard Marshall.  The Chargers would rather go into week 9 with an injured defensive backfield than with Marshall.  In a corresponding move the team signed Richard Crawford.

With Brandon Flowers nursing a concussion and rookie Jason Verrett aggravating a shoulder injury, Marshall was forced to play starter’s snaps in Thursday’s game against the Denver Broncos. He was one of the primary culprits in Emmanuel Sanders’ career performance.

After signing back-to-back one-year contracts, Marshall ended up starting seven of 24 games in San Diego over the past two seasons.

A native of Oceanside, California, Crawford had a promising rookie season with the Redskins in 2012 after they selected the 5-11, 192-pounder of Southern Methodist in the seventh round (213th overall).  Needing a win in Week 17 to reach the playoffs, he set the tone on defense by intercepting Tony Romo on the Cowboys’ third play of the game to help send his team to the postseason.  Three weeks earlier, he returned a punt in overtime for 64 yards to set up a game-winning field goal.  Crawford appeared in 10 games with 17 tackles as a rookie with three passes defensed, one interception and one fumble recovery while returning eight punts for 156 yards.
