Despite the name, American Football is played outside of the United States. One of the key regions where the game is enjoyed is Europe. Most countries on the continent have a league and mostly they are on the up and up. If you enjoy sports books you might find some best reasons to play by looking at European leagues as well as the United States.

With this in mind, let’s take a deep dive into Europe’s best NFLs.

Superserien

Although only six teams compete in Sweden’s Superserien one thing they don’t lack is heart. Teams such as the Örebro Black Knights, the Carlstad Crusaders, and the Stockholm Mean Machines have produced some excellent players and each game is fiercely contested. Their league works by the best four teams going into a playoff with the victor being crowned champions.

It is believed that should the Superserien expand and more teams participate, the Swedish NFL will be more credible putting it firmly on the map.

Vaahteraliiga

The Vaahteraliiga, Finland’s premier American football league was established in 1980 and has been going strong ever since. The season starts in May and runs through to September. In Finland, the Helsinki Roosters have won 17 championships and dominated the league been 1995 to 2000 where they won back to back leagues.

That said the Porvoo Butchers matched the Roosters by dominating between 2005 to 2010. The Finish league has no limit on how much talent can come from abroad and it has a reputation for being a melting pot of the best European players.

Currently, the league has eight teams.

The Austrian Football League

Not to be confused with the American Football League the Austrian Football League was founded in 1984 and is considered to be one of the greatest leagues in Europe. Three teams started the league the, Salzburg Lions, Vienna Ramblocks, and Graz Giants. The league gained popularity when an Austrian Football League team won the European Football League seven out of eight times from 2004 to 2011.

The Austrian Football League pulled a genius move in 2010 by allowing a non-Austrian team to join the league. The Czech Republic’s Prague Panthers played in the league until 2016. They were replaced by Slovakia’s Bratislava Monarchs and Slovenia’s Ljubljana Silverhawks.

The Austrian Football League consists of ten games a season with playoffs beginning in July. The Austrian Bowl winner is the overall champion that season.

The German Football League

The Germans not to be outdone offer the best and most competitive league in Europe. In fact, it is so competitive there are two leagues currently playing in Germany. The GFL is the premier league and one reason for the league being so strong is that it allows players to join from all over the world including America.

Both the GFL and the GFL 2 use the American NCAA rules.

The GFL was originally started in 1979 under the name American Football League and switched to GFL in 1999. New Yorker Lions, the Berlin Rebels, and Frankfurt Universe are a big draw for players around the world, and the league is easily the largest in Europe and players are evaluated similarly to the U.S.

GFL2 although it is the second league is highly competitive and teams in this league are a cut above other European countries.
