HBCU’s to the NFL are about to change in the very near future. This year, 15 players playing at Historical Black Colleges and Universities made the 53-man rosters in the NFL.

South Carolina State led the way with 5 players on a roster. So one-third of the HBCU players in the NFL are from SCSU.

FCS NFL Players from HBCUs

  1. CB Antonio Hamilton (South Carolina State)
  2. CB Bobby Price (Norfolk State)
  3. CB Decobie Durant (South Carolina State)
  4. DE De’Shaan Dixon (Norfolk State)
  5. DT Javon Hargrave (South Carolina State)
  6. LB Darius Leonard (South Carolina State)
  7. LB Joe Thomas (South Carolina State)
  8. LB Quinton Bell (Prairie View A&M)
  9. OL Ja’Tyre Carter (Southern)
  10. OL Joshua Miles (Morgan State)
  11. OL Tytus Howard (Alabama State)
  12. OT Terron Armstead (Arkansas-Pine Bluff)
  13. P Jamie Gillan (Arkansas-Pine Bluff)
  14. S Markquese Bell (Florida A&M)
  15. WR KhaDarel Hodge (Prairie View A&M)

Here is how it was broke down by Stan Beckton of NCAA.com:

NO. OF FCS PLAYERS ON NFL ROSTERHBCU
5South Carolina State
2Arkansas-Pine Bluff, Norfolk State, Prairie View A&M
1Alabama State, Florida A&M, Morgan State, Southern

I would expect this number to double and maybe triple in the coming years. Right now if Deion Sanders continues what he is doing at Jackson State he could end up with five draft picks in one draft. He has put the HBCU’s on the map, and if he can get past Tennessee State this week, it could be a huge week for the Tigers.
