Former Raiders punter Marquette King releases song “One Step” inspired by female kicker seriously injured in a car accident

Marquette King met Krysten Muir after watching the news and hearing she was in a bad car accident. Little did he know she would have a huge impact on his life.

Since leaving the NFL, Marquette King has been working on trying to change the world with his music. The talented punter is also a very amazing musician, whose hit song “Country California Girl” blew up when it was played on both MTV and VH1. His newest song is inspirational to me, someone who suffered a horrible back injury and was told they may never walk again. The song is called “One Step” and the inspiration behind it will move you.

“One Step” is a positive message that reminds us to never quit and to continually take one step when things are bad. I had the pleasure to talk with King to ask him about the hit song, and it was pretty cool to learn how the song came about.

King stated “At the time, I was having swings of depression and uncertain of my future, but just continued to make beats and surround myself in music. After creating the song and playing it for my cousin, he began saying One Step and another one and another one, and that was it. I just knew that was the song for me. It was like confirmation. I had recently met a young girl who was a kicker at an Arizona High School named Krysten Muir who was badly injured in a car accident. Doctors told her she had a 50 percent chance of walking. That inspired me.”

If you watch his hit single “One Step” below, you will see clips of Krysten working out and rehabbing to walk. Marquette was able to find Krysten, meet her, hang out and even write a song about her.

Krysten’s story is one of overcoming the odds. She was involved in a car accident on January 24, 2020 which left her with a severe spinal cord injury, where doctors gave her a 50 percent chance to walk again.

Muir told AZ Central reporter Claire Cornelius, she knew she would walk again.

“Even hearing that I’m not going to walk again, In my mind, I already knew I would. I just wanted to show everybody else that I could. Every one else has that confidence in me so I just wanted to prove to them that I can do it.”

King’s single “One Step” showed Krysten’s persistence and never give up mentality! King sent a cameraman to one of her workout sessions to get a clip of the young kicker that inspired him. While King was going through some rough patches in his life, he felt encouraged to watch Krysten’s perseverance.

“There will always be people in your life who will doubt you, and your dreams, but if you believe in yourself and constantly take one step in the direction you want to go, you are unstoppable. Krysten showed me that I can sit around and complain about my problems, or I can take one step. She is an inspiration not just to me, but everyone. She is strong, and I am proud of her.”

On January 29, 2022, Muir and her trainer went to Marco De Niza High School where she lined up holding a folding chair to her left and began kicking field goals. She missed seven consecutive kicks. Some too short, some hitting the uprights, but the eighth kick. She nailed it! The crowd went nuts!

This just goes to show you that it only takes “One Step” to accomplish anything you want to do. That is what Marquette plans to do with his music.

“This is just the beginning, Krysten motivated me with ‘One Step’ and I am planning on dropping an EP on September 2nd called “Gratitude with an Attitude”.
