The New Orleans Saints are in salary cap hell right now. Why would anyone want to go play for the Saints?
There are rumors that Deshaun Watson has offers on the table from both the New Orleans Saints and the Carolina Panthers. Watson is the one that controls his own destination, but if I was Watson why would I want to go to the Saints?
Right now the Saints are 6 million over the cap, that is according to Spotrac. Watson is scheduled to make 40 million this year. He is only 27-years-old and if the Saints want him they could have to give up a couple star players. Maybe they do give up Alvin Kamara to help get the deal done, but if that is the case, who is their running back?
The Saints will have to make moves, and they will likely not be able to re-sign Terron Armstead who kept Drew Brees safe for years. Michael Thomas is the star wide receiver and let’s face it, he has not been relevant for years.
The Panthers are a much better option. The Panthers have damn near 29 million in cap space, Watson would be closer to home. He is from Georgia, and he played college football right across the South Carolina border in Clemson.
Watson was known has a hero in Carolina, and he would return to a group of people that loved him when he was in college. Carolina has more cap space, and a younger team. I personally feel Matt Rhule is a better coach than Dennis Allen as well. If I was Deshaun Watson my decision would be easy. I would want to keep Christian McCaffrey and DJ Moore. I would not be pissed if the team let Robby Anderson go, but if he was willing to take a pay cut I would keep him
I think the Panthers have more assets moving forward, they may not give you the best deal, but If I am Watson I think real hard about the pieces around me. Panthers make more sense.
Watson could be still suspended by the NFL, but he is under contract for years. The Panthers would be crazy not to make this move happen.
