By: Justin Kelm

The Baytown Thunder made their anticipated return to the semi-professional world. For Dale Henderson and many other members, this was a long time coming. On a warm summer evening in Houston, the Thunder hosted the Coastal Bend Body Rockers. The Body Rockers made the long trip from Corpus Christi to battle the Thunder. The game was hosted by Lutheran High North – A private Christian High School. Both teams met for the coin toss. The Body Rockers won the toss but deferred until the second half. The opening drive was stalled out as the Thunder tossed the interception. The Body Rockers had a few drives before turning the ball over. The Thunder defense made the hit on the Body Rocker tight end and forced the ball to come out. After a few rushing plays the Thunder offense opened up with passing. Wide Receiver Robert Primes caught the pass and scored for the first score of the game.

The offensive line with Danny Riley gave the Thunder quarterback excellent time to get the pass out to Primes. The two-point conversion was successful as well. On the next Body Rocker drive Thunder defensive back Thomas Marshall IV made a big play bringing the Body Rocker wide receiver to the ground. Thunder safety James Butler intercepted the pass but it was called back because of a penalty. The Body Rockers’ luck ran out, the next play the Thunder returned the interception all the way for the score. The Body Rocker receiver went to the ground and as that occurred the ball ricocheted out into the Thunder’s defense. Linebacker Lyle Buckner, safety James Butler, defensive tackle Todd Irving, defensive back Thomas Marshall IV and many others made plenty of plays all evening long.

The Thunder’s offense continued to connect as Robert Primes found the end zone again, and again. After the fifth score by the Thunder, the clock rolled. After the sixth score by the Thunder, Primes was brought in at quarterback and tossed a pass to complete the two-point conversion. The score reached 42 to 0 in favor of the Thunder as the clock continued to run. Towards the end of the game, the Body Rockers found the end zone. The two-point attempt was no good. As the final buzzer rang, the Thunder won 42 to 6. With the win, the Thunder improved to 2-0. The Body Rockers fell to 0-2. The league players of the game presented by the USFL were Robert Primes and Lyle Buckner. Primes had a total of fourth touchdowns and Buckner had over 15 solo tackles.

The Thunder will take on the Houston Kings next Saturday (07.31.2021). Time and location TBA.
