Montel Barree Texas College
Montel Barree is a force on the D-line for Texas College who had a solid year in 2019 with 17 TFL and 8 sacks. He recently sat down with NFL Draft Diamonds writer Jimmy Williams.

Talk about your experience as a student. What is your major/minor? Did you participate in any other activities or campus organizations other than football?
I’m a Business Administration Major, andI’ve been on the honors list for 3 years. One day I plan on opening my own business, maybe a training facility.

What do your teammates say is your best quality?
They would say that I’m a good pass rusher, that I can get after the ball and make plays. I’m always around the ball. I’m a leader and get the defense going by setting the tone, making big plays and being a game changer.

What kind of role do you see yourself in on the team? What scheme and/or position suits your skill set?
I was named defensive team captain in 2018. I’m more of a lead by example kind of leader. Here at Texas College, I played all along the line from 0-7. At the professional level, I can see myself playing a 3-tech or in a 4-3 base scheme.

Who is the best player you have ever played against in college?
There was a lineman on Hardin Simmons. He was able to maintain great technique all throughout the game and made me stay on my “A” game.

Which one of your teammates impresses you the most?
D’Vante Gabriel is one of our starting linebackers. He’s always around the ball and gets us lined up fast making sure that everyone is on the same page. Eddie McDonald is another similar player at linebacker that’s always flying around making plays.

Describe a time in your life when you were able to overcome a struggle.
Playing DL in high school, I wasn’t always the strongest. There were times that I was double teamed that put me in a bad spot. The following season, we got a new strength and conditioning coach. That summer, he worked with us and helped us get stronger. My sophomore year, I got strong enough to take on those double team blocks. I made varsity that year and became the starter the following season.

If you didn’t play football, what other sport would you play?
Baseball. It was always a fun sport to play. I played 3B and SS in PeeWee Leagues growing up. Some of my family played baseball, but they played football too. When I got to high school, I stuck to football and haven’t looked back.

What is something that you are most proud of? What would you say is your biggest achievement?
I think I’m most proud that I have stuck through football even though it hasn’t been perfect. I’ve struggled through it at times, but I’ve persevered and done well. Being named defensive team captain is also a very humbling achievement.

Describe one of the most memorable moments of your collegiate career.
One of my best games was in 2019 against SAGU. I led the defense with 9 tackles, 3 sacks, 4.5 tackles for loss and a pass break up. I was the conference defensive player of the week.

Do you have a favorite athlete or professional team? Is there a player that you model your game after?
My favorite athlete is Aaron Donald. He’s just a different breed. He’s always around the ball and the best defensive player in the league. I like to model my game after his and Grady Jarrett. They’re not the biggest guys, but they know how to use their leverage, strength, and technique to make plays.

Who is your favorite music artist? What gets you pumped before a game?
I like to listen to Lil Wayne and Meek Mill. I listen to Meek Mill’s “Dreams and Nightmares” to get hyped before a game.

What is your favorite comfort food?
My Granny makes the best carrot cake on the planet

Do you have a favorite movie, TV show or actor?
One of my favorite actors is Martin Lawrence. He’s a funny actor who still has shows that you can watch on late night MTV. I like the movie “Life” that he’s in. I also like the movie “All About the Benjamins”.

What do you do in your spare time? Do you have any hobbies? Any secret talents?
When I’m not doing football or watching film, some of my hobbies include playing basketball or video games. I like to play Madden, 2K and Call of Duty.

Who or what motivates you the most?
Since I was little it’s been my dream to play at the professional level. My mom passed away when I was young, and she motivates me the most. Football has kept me on the right track. Another big motivator is my cousin, Michael Crabree. Seeing him make it shows that you can make it if you stay focused and dedicated to the grind.
