Draft Buzz: Catching up with Coastal Carolina Edge Jeffrey Gunter

Jeffrey Gunter Coastal Carolina
Coastal Carolina defensive end Jeffrey Gunter has been a beast. Coastal Carolina has been earning some respect around the NCAA. Gunter recently sat down with Jon-Michael Salter of NFL Draft Diamonds.

Coastal Carolina, Edge Jeffery Gunter, is a rising star in the college world. Blessed with an eye for the football, the pass rusher, has the skillset and tools, that defensive coordinators covet at all levels. A monster coming off the edge, he has been a complete terror for quarterbacks. His skillset doesn’t stop there, as he has been able to set the edge, and stop the run as well. Perhaps no college defender has taken a larger step towards greatness, than Gunter. I sat down with the underrated defender, and had a chance to pick his brain, on a few things, like who he was outside of football? Also, his take on playing ball at Coastal Carolina? I then asked him to provide a scouting report on himself.

But before I did so, I reached out to my scouting source and asked him his thoughts on Jeffrey Gunter?

“I love the kid. He reminds me of a John Randle, type. In terms of his motor. I am not saying he is the Hall-of-famer, but I am saying he is talented. He can play the edge, as a rusher, getting after the Quarterback. As well as stop the run. I love how he punishes the offense. Anybody with the ball he is punishing. Watching Coastal, has been fun this year. To me they are loaded on defense. How many NFL guys? No one knows right now, but they are loaded with talent. They have guys at every level that can hurt an offense. I think Gunter is one of those guys that stands out amongst all that talent. I have asked about him and I love the word on this guy. Humble, kind, a real leader. All those things together, plus his field presence and skill, make for a really good prospect. I think he could be a guy that we are talking about at the next level. Time will tell, but I like what he has so far.”

Moving forward Gunter, spoke to who he was outside of football, and what he brings to the field?

“I think outside of football, I am a guy that is really easy going. I don’t do anything crazy, or go out looking for trouble. You will probably catch me playing video games. Getting some food, and relaxing. Aside form that I am a family man, a family guy. I know without them I wouldn’t be anything, so I make sure I represent them well. I do the best at working hard and working to be good for my family. Same thing with who I am on the field. I am all about the team. In the locker room these guys are my family. So I work my butt off for them. I make sure they see that I am always working. On the field I like to set the tone. I love to rush the passer, and really go after them. I am aggressive, but not in a way that I am playing out of position. I am watching film, and making sure I know what I am supposed to do. I take leading by example seriously. As in showing the younger guys how things should be done. I am relaxed outside of football, but soon as I put on that helmet, I am a dog. I want to take over.”

As talented as Gunter, is. With him, what stood out was his humble approach to things. How easy it was to talk to him. As far as his film goes, you see a guy that has a high motor. He is constantly on the attack. I asked him what the biggest difference has been between this year and last? and what it was like to play for Coastal Carolina?

“I think the biggest difference has been the work we put into the season. The guys have really bought into what’s going on around here. Everybody that was here last year was pissed off about the bad season. We had some good moments, but it wasn’t good enough. Now guys are just really hungry to be out here and working our butts off. We all want this in the worst way, we really do. We want to be champs. As far as playing here it is great. I love it here at Coastal, you know I almost went somewhere else, but I am glad I ended up here. I love playing here, I love the guys. My teammates are the best, like brothers. I love it here, and the style of play we have. The aggressive nature. The way guys are just putting in that work. We know outside of our locker, people hate on us. They say we don’t belong, or whatever. But that is just talk, we can’t focus on that. We just grind and do what we have to do to keep on winning. I don’t think anybody can outwork our team.”

I recently asked Andrew DiCecco from Inside the Eagles and ESPN 97.3 provided this quote on Gunter!

Gunter is a savvy edge rusher with terrific get-off who engages blockers with violent hand usage and uses quickness to turn the corner. Veteran defender offers plus athletic traits and scheme versatility. A sleeper prospect who will make an NFL team happy.

Like I always say, put on the film and judge for yourself. Jeffrey Gunter, has the skills to be a beast at the highest level. A pure pass rusher off the edge, as well as a guy who can stop the run, play in space and has the football IQ, coaches covet. Look for Gunter, to be a name NFL scouts ask about.
