When do we throw in the towel on Baker Mayfield and Sam Darnold?

When is it the right time to throw in the towel for Baker Mayfield and Sam Darnold?

The 2018 NFL Draft was supposed to be amazing. I remember as a Bills fan hoping my team selected Josh Rosen. I wanted that kid on my roster so bad. My second choice was Lamar Jackson and then Baker Mayfield. I was hoping the Jets would select Sam Darnold, and I did not want anything to do with Josh Allen.

I mean I went on a huge rant after they selected Josh Allen over Josh Rosen. I think I called the team a bunch of dummies. I truly believed the Rosen was going to be the next big thing. My quarterback rankings in 2018 were as follows:

  1. Josh Rosen
  2. Lamar Jackson
  3. Baker Mayfield
  4. Sam Darnold
  5. Josh Allen

I knew I was not a great quarterack evaluator, I mean we should have known that when I pounded the table for guys like Brad Kaaya and Landry Jones.

Well, we are now watching them all develop, and at this point, I think it is safe to say that my top 5 list has drastically changed.

  1. Lamar Jackson
  2. Josh Allen
  3. Sam Darnold
  4. Baker Mayfield
  5. Josh Rosen

You have to feel bad for Rosen though. I mean the guy has been on three different teams in the three years he has been in the NFL. He never really was able to get into a system. There is no doubt talent there, but it continues to go to the wasteside.

When you look at Baker Mayfield, he has tons of weapons and sttuggles more than all the quarterbacks on the list except Rosen. If you ask me Baker Mayfield should be throwing for 400 a week. He has Austin Hooper, David Njoku, Kareem Hunt, Nick Chubb, Odell Beckham Jr., Rashard Higgins and Jarvis Landry. Yet, Baker cannot get anything going. They looked horrible last week against the Ravens.

Sam Darnold on the other had has the most incompetent coach in the NFL and has zero weapons around him. It is bad to see, but that is not how you treat your franchise quarterback.

So that leads me to my biggest question?

Will Mayfield and Darnold wind up like Jameis Winston and Marcus Mariota, unable to secure a second contract with their original teams?

I mean right now, Baker Mayfield has more commercials on television than wins. They wanted to blame the offense on Freddie Kitchens, but this year Baker has a new coach and already looks horrible.

According to Pro Football Focus, Baker threw 15 interceptions when protected — the second-highest figure in the league, just below Jameis Winston’s 16 picks from a clean pocket last year.

When you turn to Darnold you have to shake your head. I do not believe he is the biggest problem.

The Jets’ offensive line was among the worst in football, with Darnold kept clean at a lower percentage than any quarterback with at least 400 snaps, according to PFF.

Darnold’s staring wide receivers right now are Jamison Crowder, Chris Hogan and Breshad Perriman. If you were to give Darnold the same team that Baker Mayfield has right now the Jets are competing to win the conference.

I honestly do not believe the towel should be thrown in on either right now, but the time is running out for Baker Mayfield. Adam Gase is single handedly ruin the career of Sam Darnold, and until the Jets realize that they will not be winning the AFC East.
