Are good defenses Lamar Jackson’s kryptonite?

Lamar Jackson Ravens
The Baltimore Ravens had a magical run in 2019 until they met up with the Tennessee Titans in the playoffs. Can Lamar Jackson beat a team with a great defense and a good offense?

Lamar Jackson has his lowest passing yards ever in his career last night against the Kansas City Chiefs. Jackson is an upcoming great quarterback, but he said something after the game that made me just wonder if he fears an opposing team with a great defense.

When Jackson was asked by reporters about beating the Chiefs, Jackson quickly said “Our kryptonite.”

He is right, the Chiefs have been the only team that has really been able to spank the Ravens. Jackson is 0-3 against the Chiefs and he is 21-1 against the rest of the NFL in the regular season. The only team to beat them was the Cleveland Browns in week four of 2019.

The Chiefs kept Jackson off his game by blitzing him on 35% of his dropbacks, compared to 29% by all other teams, according to ESPN Stats & Information research.

If you go back to watch the Bills game from last year, they really did a great job at slowing down Jackson. They just struggled stopping the run. Teams that can rush the QB do a great job at slowing him down. The Titans did the same thing in the playoffs. Jackson even said this quote to ESPN about it being the same as the Titans game.

“It looked like the same thing from the Tennessee game [2019 divisional playoff] to be honest — that’s all,” Jackson said.

Jackson is a good quarterback, but what are the Chiefs doing differently? I can tell you. They have an offense that can put up the points to compete. The Titans won because they controlled the time of possession by running the ball. Teams with great defenses that can score will beat the Ravens. Unfortunately, there are not many teams like that in the NFL.

So, until teams can fix their offensive problems, Lamar Jackson will keep winning. If the Ravens defense could step up the Ravens would win more as well. So this is not a Lamar Jacskon problem, this is a team problem. Lamar Jackson is still a beast, but his comments will get a ton of criticism.
