2021 NFL Draft Prospects: Trey Ragas and Elijah Mitchell, RB, Ragin’ Cajuns

Louisiana Lafayette Trey Ragas Elijah Mitchell
The University of Louisiana at Lafayette has one of the best two headed monsters at running back in college football. Trey Ragas and Elijah Mitchell are studs.

We usually break an individual player down in Draft Breakdowns on NFL Draft Diamonds, but I feel it is only right to talk about both running backs from Louisiana Lafayette. The Ragin’ Cajuns have turned into Running Back
“U”!

This year the Ragin’ Cajuns have two draft pick running backs in Elijah Mitchell and Trey Ragas. The crazy thing is last year in the NFL Draft, Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns had three players drafted including Ragas and Mitchell’s teammate Raymond Calais. Calais was selected by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the 7th round of the 2020 NFL Draft. This year, both Mitchell and Ragas should hear their name called as well. Let’s break them down.

Sun Belt has the real two headed monster

The Sun Belt Conference is often overlooked, but lately the Ragin’ Cajuns have been putting players in the NFL and have the scouts attention. The three headed monster in the backfield for the Cajuns last year caught the attention of NFL scouts and now everyone is paying attention.

Elijah Mitchell maybe the best running back from that group. He ran the ball 42 times for 257 yards scoring four touchdowns and he only played in five games, as a Freshman.

The 5’11, 220 pound back would take off the next few years. Last season, Mitchell broke 1000 yards on the ground on just 187 carries. The Erath, Louisiana native went over 100 yards five times on the year, and scored 15 touchdowns. With Calais’ departure, I would not be surprised to see Mitchell break 1500 yards his senior year.

Trey Ragas on the other hand is the so-called power back. The Zach Moss power type. The 5’10, 220 pound bruiser will join Mitchell for their senior year, and I expect a huge year from Ragas as well.

Ragas was the most highly recruited of the three backs for the Ragin’ Cajuns, but injuries took a toll on him. He would however dominate the conference in 2018 going for more than 1,100 yards rushing on 207 attempts. Last season though, Ragas played behind both Mitchell and Calais, he finished with 796 yards on just 109 attempts. That is freaking impressive considering it will only be Mitchell and Ragas in 2020.

NFL Draft Diamonds Scouting Notes:

I would not be shocked if both Elijah Mitchell and Trey Ragas were drafted in 2021. Both running backs have two different styles that the NFL is looking for. The NFL has turned into a two back system, you rarely have one running back carrying the load like years in the past. Ragas is a big back that can help out at the goal line, while Mitchell can be the top back for teams. I expect both to be drafted in 2021, the question is when will they hear their name? – Damond Talbot, NFL Draft Diamonds owner
