Juan Hernandez was a standout kicker for his football team at Eagle Rock High School. He was named a captain of his football team and soccer team where he played all four years. Hernandez drowned in the Tule River near Springville, California on Sunday, according to reports.

The Tulare County Coroner’s Office identified Juan Hernandez, 17, of Los Angeles on Monday afternoon.

The Tulare County Sheriff’s Office says Hernandez went into the river in an area known as “The Stairs” above Springville at about 4 pm on Sunday.

After about 10-20 minutes in the water, he was pulled out by bystanders and taken to Sierra View Hospital, where he died.

The Eagle Rock senior was a great athlete and he was planning to attend Cal State Fullerton in the fall. Eagle Rock turned on their scoreboard last night to honor Hernandez. They displayed his numbers as a student athlete by showing 13 and 21 his football and soccer number.
