NFL Draft

Will Second Pick Actually Be the First Ranked Player?

Is Chase Young the better prospect than Joe Burrow? That is the true question here.

At the onset of the 2020 NFL Draft is the supposed fait accompli of Joe Burrow going first.  Ironically enough Burrow is not ranked as the number one prospect for the draft.  That distinction goes to EDGE rusher Chase Young.  Second ranked on the lists of many NFL scouts is cornerback Jeff Okudah.  And linebacker Isaiah Simmons ranks higher than Burrow on many lists as well.  Debates rage that Burrow may not even be the best quarterback available for Thursday’s first round.  All of which means who goes second is a hot topic for the NFL Draft betting lines.

2020 NFL Draft Second Player Picked Odds

First overall pick is still expected to be Burrow.  Second pick looks to be a wide-open sports betting question.  Tua Tagovailoa’s looks like the kingpin prospect.  Once it is settled where Tua goes the rest of the picks should fall into place.  Let’s examine who could go second in the 2020 NFL Draft.

QB – Joe Burrow – LSU

Certainly, Burrow has strong credentials as LSU’s national championship quartearback.  Burrow won the 2019 Heisman Trophy going away.  His numbers were video game crazy.  It was the epitome of a perfect season.  Of great concern is that it was the only season Burrow stood out and excelled.  Was it a portent of things to come?  Or is Burrow a one hit wonder?  Certainly, the Cincinnati Bengals love Burrow’s Ohio high school football connections.  Their perpetual failures and fading fan support require a new marquee man.  But will they get cold feet?

EDGE – Chase Young – Ohio State

To begin with Chase Young has often had the look of a dream EDGE rusher.  Young posted 16.5 sacks in 11 games last year.  He caught national attention for compiling four sacks against Wisconsin and three more against Penn State.  Yet he faded into witness protection down the stretch.  Young failed to post a sack in his final two games.  Which were the Big Ten championship game and college football playoff.  Young is inconsistent and needs to improve vs. the run.  But his potential intoxicates NFL scouts.

QB -Tua Tagovailoa – Alabama

Extending Tua’s reputation is his unforgettable performance in the 2017 national championship game.  Tagovailoa came off the bench and rallied Alabama to an overtime win for the ages.  As a two-year starter for the Crimson Tide he rewrote the passing record book.  However, he failed to complete either season.  On one hand Tua wowed all NFL scouts at his workout.  Many scouts view him as the best quarterback in then 2020 NFL Draft.  Counter to that are durability concerns.

CB – Jeff Okudah – Ohio State

A clear difference exists in favor of Okudah compared to other prospects.  He is seen as the ultimate shutdown corner.  So too does that factor in with every NFL team needing such players.  Okudah doesn’t command the same attention with the NFL Draft Betting lines as other prospects.  But his real NFL betting value must never be underestimated.

QB – Justin Herbert – Oregon

Based on looks alone Herbert is the prototypical NFL quarterback.  His big build and rocket arm make NFL scouts salivate.  Additionally, he has deceptively good speed.  No signal caller brings more God-given ability to the 2020 NFL Draft.  Offsetting that is Herbert’s inconsistency.  That trait has driven coaches, fans and gamblers up the wall.  Summing up, most scouts believe that the right coach can make Herbert into a Pro Bowl quarterback.

LB – Isaiah Simmons – Clemson

In like manner to Okudah, Simmons doesn’t get a lot of headlines.  By contrast to other prospects he may bring the most immediate value to any team that takes him.  He is a complete player that can line up at multiple positions.
