How much money do players make for playing in the Super Bowl?

The Super Bowl is a fun time. I am a huge fan of the game, and let’s face it so are the players playing in it. Do you know what it means to win the Lombardi Trophy? Not only that, do you know how much they get paid if they win that Lombardi Trophy?

Let’s look at some fun facts about the Super Bowl, and let us know your favorite fact!

The Lombardi Trophy is manufactured each year by New York-based jewelry maker Tiffany & Company. The award is about 21 inches tall and weighs approximately 107 ounces, according to the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

The Lombardi Trophy is made out of pure sterling silver and each version has a base value of more than $10,000.

The New England Patriots and Pittsburgh Steelers have each won the Lombardi Trophy six times, tied for most among NFL franchises. The Dallas Cowboys and San Francisco 49ers are tied for second place with five wins apiece. Can the Niners get their sixth tomorrow?

Players on the Super Bowl championship team will make $124,000.

Players on the losing Super Bowl team will earn $62,000.

Players have already cleaned house because they make money all the way leading up to the Super Bowl. You can figure out how much they made by looking at these stats.

  • In the AFC and NFC conference championship games, all players earned $56,000.
  • In the divisional round, all players earned $31,000.
  • Wild-card division winners earned $31,000.
  • Other wild-card players earned $28,000.

Of the NFL’s 32 teams, just four have never made it to a Super Bowl: the Cleveland Browns, Detroit Lions, Houston Texans and Jacksonville Jaguars.

The team with the most total yards in the Super Bowl is 40-13.

There has never been a punt return touchdown in Super Bowl history.

This is the first Super Bowl to feature two teams with red as their primary uniform color

The team leading at halftime of the Super Bowl is 39-11 (there have been three ties).

In the 53 Super Bowl coin tosses, tails leads heads, 29-24. Each of the last nine coin-toss winners has deferred to the second half, including the Rams last year. The coin toss winner has lost each of the last five Super Bowls.

The team with the fewest turnovers is 37-5 in Super Bowls. There have been 11 Super Bowls in which the teams had the same turnover total.

The Chiefs have scored at least 30 points in each of quarterback Patrick Mahomes’ first four career postseason starts, tied for the second-longest postseason streak in the Super Bowl era.

At 24 years and 138 days old on Sunday, Mahomes is the fifth-youngest quarterback to start a Super Bowl. The only quarterbacks who were younger were Hall of Famer Dan Marino (23 years, 127 days in Super Bowl XIX), Ben Roethlisberger (23 years, 340 days in Super Bowl XL), Miami’s David Woodley (24 years, 97 days in Super Bowl XVII) and the Rams’ Jared Goff (24 years, 112 days last year in Super Bowl LIII).

Kansas City is playing in its third Super Bowl. The Chiefs played in Super Bowl I (when it was called the NFL-AFL Championship Game) and Super Bowl IV, when they upset the Minnesota Vikings. Lamar Hunt, who founded the franchise in 1960 and passed away in 2006, helped create the AFL. He also asked then-NFL Commissioner Pete Rozelle to call the game the Super Bowl.

The Chiefs’ 50-year gap between Super Bowl appearances is by far the longest in history. The Baltimore/Indianapolis Colts went 36 years between Super Bowl appearances (Super Bowl V in the 1970 season to Super Bowl XLI in 2006).

Kansas City coach Andy Reid is sixth on the NFL’s career list with 221 victories (207 in the regular season and 14 in the postseason). That is the highest total by a coach who has never won a championship.

Kansas City is looking to end the second-longest drought among teams who have won the Super Bowl at 50 years. Only the Jets, at 51 years and counting, have gone longer.

San Francisco’s all-time postseason record is 33-21 (.611). The Chiefs’ playoff record is 12-19 (.387).

49ers coach Kyle Shanahan and his father Mike Shanahan, who coached the Denver Broncos and Washington Redskins, could become the first father and son head coaches to win Super Bowls. Mike won Super Bowls XXXII and XXXIII as head coach of the Broncos.

San Francisco quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, who will make his first career Super Bowl start, has a 23-5 (.821) record as a starter, including the postseason.

The 49ers, who were 4-12 in 2018, became the third team to advance to a Super Bowl after winning four-or-fewer games the prior season, joining the 1999 St. Louis Rams (4-12 in 1998) and the 1988 Cincinnati Bengals (4-11 in 1987).

The 49ers are playing in their seventh Super Bowl, the fifth-highest total behind New England (11), Dallas, Denver and Pittsburgh (eight apiece). San Francisco’s most recent appearance was a loss to Baltimore in Super Bowl XLVII seven years ago.

The 49ers’ last won the Super Bowl 25 years ago – in the same stadium in which they will play on Sunday. On Jan. 29, 1995, the 49ers concluded the NFL’s 75th season with a 49-26 victory over the San Diego Chargers in Miami in Super Bowl XXIX.
