NFL Draft

Diamond Talk: HBCU has some beastly QB’s | Don’t @ me

Diamond Talk was created to shine the light on several players who I feel have really dominated in the past and I feel will have a great shot at hearing their name called in the 2020 NFL Draft. I could do an individual article for each of the guys I am about the mention, but I do not want to take away from the fact that the HBCU has some gunslingers in 2019. Let’s stop talking about what we feel and bring out the prospects!

Jalen Morton, QB, Prairie View A&M University – The 6040 quarterback has a monster arm and will run all over you if you do not spy him. He has a huge frame, and threw for 2,344 yards last season with 18 touchdowns. He did this on 327 attempts and I feel he will be a guy who NFL teams fall in love with because of his athletic ability. He is a fun player to watch and I think he will shock many players this year in the SWAC.

Deondre Francois, QB, Hampton – I know he has not taken a snap yet at Hampton, but he was one of the best quarterbacks coming out the Nation a few years back landing on Florida State. He was a three year starter at Florida State who threw for 6,291 yards and 35 touchdowns and was also the ACC Rookie of the Year in 2016. Now he is ready to show he is ready with the Pirates.

Noah Johnson, QB, Alcorn State – The SWAC offensive player of the year and SWAC Championship MVP is a player that NFL teams will evaluate really heavily. His size could hurt him standing at 6000 but when you watch him play he plays like he is 6030. He ranks eighth all-time in school history in touchdown passes (30), ninth in passing yards (4,018) and 10th in rushing yards (1,867). I like this kid and feel he will get a shot.

Caylin Newton, QB, Howard – Yes I am going to add a Junior. I know he is likely to stay another year, but I would be wrong if I didn’t include him because he has been a huge asset to the Bison offense. Everyone know’s him as Cam Newton’s little brother, but this kid is amazing. Newton is a 6000 quarterback as well, but he can kill you with his arm and his legs. He is very similar to his brother, which is why many compare him to Cam, but He was the MEAC Offensive Player of the Year for a reason, the kid is talented.

All of these kids should get a look, and it is great to see the HBCU schools finally getting some love at the QB position!
