Jackson State football lead FCS football in attendance per game averaging 24,770 per game

People may think of the band when they think of HBCU football but Jackson State has put some studs in the NFL over the years, and their fan base is the best in the FCS according to statistics.

FCS football is not a hot commodity in some parts, but one HBCU school is topping the rest of the entire division. Jackson State, the Alma Mater of “Sweetness” Walter Payton topped all FCS Football Programs with 24,770 fans in attendance for their four home games last year.

Montana came in second with 24,677 fans over six home games, which ranked number 1 in the three previous seasons.

Some others that were up there were:

  • James Madison – (24,677 over six games)
  • Southern – (18,803 over four games)
  • North Dakota State (18,106 over 10 games)
  • Florida A&M (17,873 over six games)
  • Jacksonville State (16,904 over six games)
  • Montana State (16,741 over seven games)
  • Delaware (16,299 over six games)
  • Alabama State (16,073 over four games)

Seven of the 13 top attendances came from the HBCU football programs.  The SWAC conference had the best average in all of the FCS with 15,240 fans per game, while the MEAC another HBCU conference was third with 9,815 fans per game. 

The Missouri Valley Football Conference was second with 9,864 fans per game. Either way the HBCU fans come out in large quantities.
