New York Jets

If Jets pick their GM from who they interviewed they will be better

The New York Jets cannot go wrong with any of the candidates they interviewed. I think Joe Douglas will get the job, but all the others would fit the system well.

I am a huge Buffalo Bills fan, but I have to give the Jets ownership some credit. I know people are taking shots at the Jets for the way they handled the Mike Maccagnan and letting Adam Gase take control of the team for the time being, but the Jets are making good progress.

They are interviewing guys who are absolutely qualified for the job. I have worked in this industry for quite some time and have gotten to know all the guys they interviewed, and if they pick from the guys they interviewed they will be just fine.

Joe Douglas is likely the front runner at this point. He spent time in Chicago before joining the Eagles as their VP of Player Personnel.  He has also scouting college players and is well versed overall.  I could see this as a great hire.  Let’s look at the others who interviewed as well.

George Paton of the Vikings refused to interview, but he too would have been a great hire. You will not find an agent in this league that has something bad to say about Paton. He will respond to your messages extremely fast and if he feels a player can help his team he will pounce on him.

Scott Fitterer of the Seahawks was one of the first scouts I ever met.  We were at an All-Star Game and he treated me very well. We have had an awesome relationship since, and he is very quick to respond to messages. Fitterer is a younger guy who is a very solid talent evaluator.  This would be a sleeper pick, because I am willing to bet he will interview really well.

Terry Fontenot of the Saints is another guy I like. He has tons of experience and is known around the league for his hard work. The Saints would lose a huge asset if he was given the job. I would not be surprised if he lands a GM job very soon though because he is highly regarded in the scouting community.

Champ Kelly is my favorite of the bunch. I am sorry he is great, and has treated us at Draft Diamonds with so much respect. If you are looking for a guy that will go above and beyond at finding the best players that is Champ Kelly. Champ also fills the Rooney Rule for the Jets in this interview process.  If Champ is given the job I will be rooting for him to succeed.

Basically it is simple, the Jets did a great job. That is not always the case in this industry. The Jets pulled the best of the best when it came down to the candidates and I would not be shocked if the Jets start competing heavily in the AFC East soon.
