Rishard Matthews apologizes after he said he would quit before standing for anthem

Rishard Matthews feels a certain way when it comes to the stance on the National Anthem. Matthews’ father “is a longtime Marine” and his brother “died in Afghanistan.” Not only that, his teammate in college was Colin Kaepernick.  Matthews is taking some criticism for a tweet he recently posted.

Tennessee Titans wide receiver Rishard Matthews was asked how he would respond to the possibility of the NFL mandating players stand during the national anthem. He responded by saying he would retire before immediately deleting the tweet.

It was captured on Twitter though, and here is what was said:

Not right now,” Matthews said, via Paul Kuharsky of paulkuharsky.com, when asked if he was serious about retiring. “

“Sometimes people, as you all know, tweet some ignorant things out at some moments, and that was an ignorant thing I tweeted out at that given moment. I take full responsibility. That’s why it went down [was deleted], but somebody caught me with a screen shot.”

Matthews called his tweet a mistake, per Pro Football Talks’ Charean Williams.

“I’m a man, and sometimes you make bad decisions at the wrong time,” Matthews said. “And at that time, I made a bad decision to tweet that out at that given moment.”
