NFL Draft Diamonds Scouting Report: Pat Mahomes, QB, Texas Tech
- Pat Mahomes, QB. Texas Tech
- Height: 6’2″
- Weight: 225 lbs
- Hometown: Tyler, TX
Pros: Arm strength, fits balls into spots you rarely see quarterbacks make. Doesn’t hesitate with throws and the ball arrives with heat on it. Great improvisation. Reads and reacts quickly, if he sees someone open his instinct is throw the ball now. Incredible touch passes. Great anticipation when it comes to throwing the ball. Could excel with play-action throws. Excellent ball placement. When on the move, his arm strength can make up for the fact that he’s on the move outside the pocket and may not have his feet set. Extremely athletic.Plays with passion and continues to compete no matter what.
Cons: As with other gun-slinger quarterbacks, he does make some terrible decisions. Doesn’t exactly have the best mechanics when it comes to footwork. Has happy feet and will sometimes leave a clean pocket rather than sit and throw. Goes for the big play rather than live for another down which will get him into trouble in the NFL. Forces throws and doesn’t go to the check down when he should. Has quite a few predetermined reads.
Overall: Mahomes has a chance to be something very special in the NFL. Fortunately, his mechanic issues are coachable, however his ambition to prefer the explosive play over the checkdown play will be a habit Mahomes will have. It’s easy to see he will live and die by the big play, so he will certainly be an entertaining player in the NFL. He has potential to be something special, it will all come down to coaching and becoming more polished. He will fit in an aerial offense, and luckily for him there’s quite a few teams that will fall in love with his qualities. Tremendous upside, however it may take some time for him to get there. Expect some growing pains early on, but Mahomes is a competitor and you can guarantee he’s going to give his all.
