NFL Draft Diamonds Scouting Report: Darren Wilson, DT, Elizabeth City State
  • Darren Wilson, DT. Elizabeth City State Univeristy
  • Height: 6’2″
  • Weight: 315
  • Hometown: Hackensack, NJ
Pros: Motor doesn’t stop. Continues to move his feet rather than get level footed. Plays until the whistle and tracks the ball. Doesn’t get fooled and seems to recognize where the play is going. Has shown the ability to use the swim move and bull rush. Biggest strength is that he doesn’t allow himself to get taken out of plays and plugs holes; again great recognition. Does a good job trying to keep hands off of him. Has faced double teams quite a few times. Good pursuit to the ball and anticipation off the snap. Takes good angles.
Cons: Sometimes plays too high, will need to get better technique with that. While he moves his feet, can sometimes move them too much rather than anchor. While strong to keep hands off of him, he can sometimes get pushed back, will need to work on lower body technique. Not exactly the most explosive and isn’t the greatest pass rusher. Not the fastest, but that can be expected from a nose tackle.
Overall: Wilson has the physical and mental traits of a defensive nose tackle. He may have to refine some lower body technique, but there’s certainly potential there. He’s always around the ball and plugging holes. Seems to have great work ethic and doesn’t give up, on or off the field. There are solid building blocks he has in his game. He shows the ability to diagnose plays and doesn’t get fooled. There will be areas where he can improve, but those areas can be coached up. There’s some really good tape and aspects to his game that scouts should take note of.
