2016 NFL Scouting Notes: Tyler Boyd, WR, Pittsburgh

As we continue with the Wide Receiver position in scouting notes we come across a player who made ACC history becoming the first player to gain 1000 yards in both his freshman and sophomore year. Tonight we look at Tyler Boyd, here are my notes:

The Positives

1) Boyd is a very good route runner, often using body fakes to sell the route.

2) Has very good body control

3) Good hands

The Negatives

1) Needs to improve run blocking

2) May need to gain weight for the NFL level

3) Has just ok speed

4) Off the field question marks

Tyler Boyd became the 1st player in ACC history to have over 1000 yards receiving in both his freshman and sophomore season. Last year he had 78 catches for 1261 yards and 8 TD’s. He reportedly runs a 4.47 40 time, which is ok speed, and while he usually has very good hands he does have the occasional lack of concentration drop. He makes up for his speed by being a very good route runner, using body fakes to sell his routes, and he has very good body control. Boyd was arrested in the offseason and charged with a DUI, and he will be duly vetted by the NFL during the draft process. Boyd is a talented player, but his off the field troubles and his light weight may combine to trouble some teams. But, if he explodes this season, and stays out of trouble, he could also be a sought after player.
