The Detroit Lions began the process on Monday by releasing the following players: tight end Deon Butler, receiver Ryan Broyles, quarterback Garret Gilbert, receiver Vernon Johnson, running back Desmond Martin, defensive tackle Roy Philon, cornerback Jocquel Skinner, cornerback R.J. Stanford and defensive end Erik Williams.

That currently puts the roster at 78 players, which means the Lions still have a few cuts to make before Tuesday’s deadline.

Lions also removed DT Haloti Ngata from the non-football injury list and activated RB Joique Bell from the PUP list.

Cornerback Chris Owens was placed on season-ending injured reserve .
