2016 NFL Scouting Notes: Mike Williams, WR, Clemson

2016 NFL Scouting Notes: Mike Williams, WR, Clemson
By Lijah Spencer (@tweaked74)
Tonight we continue our look at Wide Receivers. As always these notes are based off from last year’s film, and precede the full scouting report which will come after I view film from this upcoming season. Tonight’s player spotlight is on Mike Williams from Clemson, here are my notes:

The Positives

1) Good NFL size

2) Good route running

3) Has good speed

The Negatives

1) Has inconsistent hands

2) Needs to improve his run blocking

Mike Williams is an explosive athlete. He played QB, and RB in high school before moving to WR permanently his junior season. He has good enough speed to run past defenders, and is a quality route runner often baiting his defender into making a mistake. He has the ability to make the tough catch, but does so inconsistently at this point. A player this athletic, but so inexperienced brings up the dreaded “P” word, potential (and there is an old saying in football…. “Potential gets coaches fired”). If he progresses this season, and becomes the playmaker he can be, then he should be a sought after prospect. But, if the inconsistencies continue, he may drop down the ranks in some scouts eyes.
