Last season, the Green Back Packers had a very, very strong year; however, they lacked at the safety position. Because of this, when they were drafting during the 2014 NFL draft and Ha Ha Clinton-Dix was still on the board, their decision was easy. Clinton-Dix was listed by most scouts as the first overall safety available, and when the New York Jets passed him up with the 18th overall pick, he fell right into the lap of the Packers. They drafted him with the 21st overall pick, and next season, he should be able to make a huge difference for the Green Bay Packers defense.
While at Alabama, Clinton-Dix was consistently the best player on the team. Over the course of three seasons, Clinton-Dix racked up 59 tackles and seven INT’s, and he was always able to cover his man. So far, through his scouting reports and through his performances in OTA minicamps, he has shown that he has the ability to be a very good safety at the NFL level. He has great feet, and he is one of the fastest defensive players that was available in the draft. Even more impressive is his ability to keep up with receivers and match them step for step. On routes that cut very quickly, where defensive players often have a much harder time covering the offensive player, Clinton-Dix has shown that he is one of the best players in all of football and understanding and reading where players will be moving to. Because of this, the Packers will be able to use him in many different scenarios.
His speed makes him a huge asset at any part of the field. Even from deep coverage, Clinton-Dix has the ability to run down the field at top speed and make tackles that players who are 20 yards closer couldn’t even make. He is able to shut down plays that look like sure touchdowns, and because of this, he will be able to keep a lot of points off of the board. Aside from this, he is also able to jump into a defensive position when a running play collapses and the team turns to the pass. He is able to use his speed to get up the field quickly, and cover players as well as cornerbacks do.
Overall, Clinton-Dix is clearly a player who will be able to make an immediate impact on the Green Bay Packers, and there is no doubt that he will start in 2014. He has shown that he is always willing to give 110%, and his off field demeanor is great – he is the perfect player both on and off the field, which the Packers absolutely love. Last season, the Packers defense struggled, and QB Aaron Rodgers and the rest of the offense were forced to pick up the slack. With the addition of Dix, the Packers have moved towards a more complete team, and his production in 2014 should be fantastic.
