NFL Draft

Should Michael Sam have waited to say he was Gay?

Michael Sam the former SEC standout defensive end wanted to really get the news out that he was “Gay” because he didn’t want the news to come out at the NFL Scouting Combine or unnoticed.  Sam wanted to make sure he was honest and up front about his sexual preference.  Well know that Sam has came out the closet so to speak, he could have closed the door on his future in the NFL as well.

Today a report came out from Bob McGinn of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel which polled 21 NFL scouts from around the league, and one of the question was regarding the former SEC Defensive Player of the Year.  The question posed was where will Michael Sam be drafted, but the response was not a heart warming answer.

The reason you don’t hear much about Sam anymore a few days before the draft is this is the time for real players. Based on discussions over the last month about Sam’s capability as a player with about two dozen NFL executives in personnel, he’s regarded almost as a non-entity.

The Journal Sentinel polled 21 scouts with national responsibilities asking what round, if any, they would be comfortable selecting Sam.

Three said fifth round. Three said sixth round. Three said seventh round. Five said they would sign him as a free agent. Seven said they wouldn’t sign him as a free agent.

I don’t know if it was the right time to tell the world, but whoever gives Sam an opportunity will be award the top jersey seller.  If a “Gay” basketball player can sell out in jersey sales after signing a 10 day contract, imagine a player getting drafted?  I see a guy like Jerry Jones trying to capitalize on this move.
