deshawnDraft Diamonds Prospect Interview: Deshawn Ross, DT, Kentucky State

How many teams were recruiting you out of high school?

I had been getting looked at by many of the local schools such as the University Louisville, Western Kentucky, Eastern Kentucky, Murray State and the University of Kentucky.

Where did you choose and why?

Well to be honest my journey as been everywhere. I orginally chose a junior college out of Illinois called College Of Dupage. After a year, I decided to leave and go to Southwest Baptist in Missouri. I remained at the university for about year and a half, before deciding to come back home. After all of my explorations through these different universities, I decided to spend my senior year playing defensive tackle and full back for Kentucky State University.

What were your goals for your senior year?

My goals were to lead the team in sacks and tackles for loss. I also want to make the All Conference team/ All American team.

Have any scouts met with you, and if so what are they saying?

Yes Sir a couple have contacted me they said to keep working and focus more on hand speed and placement.

At your position, what separates you from the others?

I think my power, speed, and leverage separates me from other players. Also my desire, prestige, and my work ethic gives me a head start on and off the field.

Tell us what you look for when breaking down film?

I look to see what are some of his tendencies, is he heavy up top or is light on his feet? Does he give away the plays by his stance or is there some type of secret thing the center and guard does before ever snap?

Who was the toughest player you have ever faced?

I think the toughest player I ever faced were all 5 of my offensive linemen here at Kentucky State. They prepared me each week.

If you could compare your play to one person in the NFL who would it be?

I would have to say Geno Atkins, for the simple fact he’s not a big guy so he understands leverage and posses great power.

What was the biggest obstacle in your life you had to overcome, and how did you overcome it?

Some of my biggest obstacles were having a baby after my first year of junior college and having to sit out two and a half this season. I count these as obstacles because a child has to be your first priority and football is my first love.

What system fits your style of play the best?

I believe in system fits me because in High School I was in the 3-4 scheme, and in my college days I was in the 4-3 scheme and was asked to play the nose and the 3 technique.

What is your biggest strength?

My biggest strength is my leverage, speed, explosion and my desire to never quit.

What is your biggest weakness?

My biggest weakness is my height, and not staying at one school throughout my whole career.

Growing up, who was your role model?

My Community, and parents were my biggest role models.

Who was your favorite team and player in the NFL and why?

My favorite team is the St Louis Rams, my favorite player is Geno Atkins because he overcame all the speculations that you had to be 6’3 to play the position.

If I were a GM and gave you a second to sell yourself, what would you say?

I would tell them I’m hard working, motivated, determined, and coachable.

What was the most tragic event that ever happened in your life and how did you overcome it?

My first year of college my brother was killed. When we was younger he always told me you have a gift to play this game of football, and I want you to continue to play this game until you cant anymore. Until this day I’m striving to keep playing for him.

If you were to have dinner with three people dead or alive who would it be?

President Barack Obama, Kobe Bryant, And My Brother Michael Dickerson

With your first paycheck what would you buy?

My family and for a fresh start In Life. I would also put money up for my sons college.
