Alabama’s former quarterback A.J. McCarron better wake up, he is not a 1st rounder

Today former Alabama quarterback A.J. McCarron was asked by AL.com what he has been hearing from NFL teams in regards to his draft stock, and his answer was shocking.

“They felt like I could go anywhere from 16-35,” McCarron said. “I believe that, too. At the same time, I don’t have my hopes set on anything. Whatever happens, happens. It’s a blessing for me to even be in this situation.”

The 16th pick is held by the Baltimore Ravens, will not be drafting a quarterback with their first pick, and the 35th pick, which comes four picks into the second round, is held by the Cleveland Browns, who are in the market for a quarterback. McCarron worked out for the Browns earlier this month. That pick is a little more realistic, but I am not sure it will happen.

A matter of fact, both Mel Kiper Jr. and Todd McShay have him rated as a 4th round quarterback.  I actually have him as a 3rd rounder, but whoever is telling him he is a top 35 pick is misleading him. He acted as if we shouldn’t believe the pre-draft hype saying its “all a big poker game.”

“It’s not like the GMs are calling these guys and telling them, ‘Hey, we’re going to draft this guy at this number so go ahead and put that out there,'” McCarron said. “One thing I’ve learned about this whole process, it’s nothing but a big secret.

“A lot of times teams will bring in a guy just to bluff another team and make it seem like toward the media that they like this guy and really they have no interest at all in drafting him.”

While McCarron is absolutely right, if he believes he is a top 35 pick, he might want to stop and re-evaluate the draft process. If any team takes him in the top 35, they would be making a major mistake.
