Draft Diamonds Prospect Interview: Jeremy Butler, WR, Tennessee-Martin
Jeremy Butler is a huge Diamond in the Rough, and my favorite small school wide receiver. I have watched every game of Butler and the kid continues to shine. At the beginning of the year, I set a goal for him and he broke it. The kid is a work horse, and someone that will get a shot in the NFL. At 6’3, 214 pounds, Butler will be a great possession receiver in the NFL.
How many teams were recruiting you out of high school?
Out of high school not many teams recruited me so I took the JUCO route.
Where did you choose and why?
I eventually ended up at Tenn. Martin after a long crazy process after junior college.
What are your goals for your senior year?
My goals were to just get all of my talent and ability out myself and to become a leader a few statistics goals but mainly just get the most of my talent out of myself.
Have any scouts met with you, and if so what are they saying?
I’ve met with a lot of scouts and have received great positive feedback. I have heard comparisons to Anquan Boldin who is my favorite wideout so thats pretty nice. I will just put it in God’s hands and control what I can control everything will work itself out
At your position, what separates you from the others?
Honestly I don’t see myself as some freak athlete but what does separate me is that I’m a football player at wideout not just a wideout. I’m the type of guy you can put in any football era and I would fit in.
Tell us what you look for when breaking down film?
I don’t get caught up in watching certain defensive backs or numbers I watch how they protect different zones of the field, how they play man to man and noticeable weaknesses.
Who was the toughest player you have ever faced?
I’d probably say a Tennessee State transfer from University of Florida who followed me around all game. I ended up having 11-130 and a TD but the man to man was a challenge I enjoyed.
If you could compare your play to one person in the NFL who would it be?
I’d go with Anquan Boldin. He has strong hands, physical, ability to make plays after catch, and blocking.
What was the biggest obstacle in your life you had to overcome, and how did you overcome it?
Probably the recruiting process. Being doubted and not really getting opportunities was hard. I had doubts from time to time but i definitely know i belong now.
What system fits your style of play the best?
Probably pro style offenses where I can work pro style routes such as skinny posts play action passes.
What is your biggest strength?
What is your biggest weakness?
If I were a GM and gave you a second to sell yourself, what would you say?
No matter what goes down on paper about me as a athlete, its something inside of me that can’t be measured. That is the fire inside, the will and drive to be great not just another guy in a jersey.
Growing up, who was your role model?
Who was your favorite team and player in the NFL and why?
Never had a favorite team but loved Michael Irvin once i started watching football.
What was the most tragic event that ever happened in your life and how did you overcome it?
My cousin passing away, because we are a small family so all very much in each others lives. That really hit me deep and it was the first time we really had a death in a family that i could remember. I prayed and just had faith that God has a plan for all of us certain things are out of our hands.
If you were to have dinner with three people dead or alive who would it be?
Nelson Mandela,Floyd Mayweather and my son
With your first paycheck what would you buy?
Probably nothing of material but put it up into my sons savings account
