Draft Diamonds Spotlight Interview: Dominique Williams, RB, Wagner

Among the most over-looked prospects in the NFL Draft, Dominique Williams should be a real find for whichever NFL team grabs him. Blending a thick build, deceptive speed and top-level agility/vision, Williams has a knack for the big play, although his college offense really didn’t allow many of them. Here is our prospect interview with Dominique.

How many teams were recruiting you out of high school?
ZERO!

How did you come to make your college decision?
It was actually my mom’s gut feeling. She said she just felt it. Plus my childhood friend, Josh Thompson, was attending Wagner as a member of the basketball team.

Where are you training, and what are your goals for pro day/combines?
I’m a low key person lol. My goals are a bit personal.

Have any scouts met with you, and if so what are they saying?
I spoke with a few and the main thing they’ve all said was to start catching some passes. Also work on my flexibility.

At your position, what separates you from the others?
To be honest I’m not sure. What I’ve been told is that my ability to pick up the blitz was something that stood out on film.

Tell us what you look for when breaking down film?
A breif description of what I look for when breaking down film is that I immediately recognize the offensive formation before anything. Then I look to identify the defensive front right after. Everything starts up front. I look to see how line backers position themselves pre-snap and safety rotations for coverage identification.

Who was the toughest player you have ever faced?
Honestly I don’t know.

If you could compare your play to one person in the NFL who would it be?
Another question I’m not sure of either.

What was the biggest obstacle in your life you had to overcome, and how did you overcome it?
My ACL injury was one. It required more mental work than physical if you ask me. My mom and my love for the game pretty much helped me overcome it. Talking to her made me realize I belong on the field again. Also my strength coach Brandon Beach and my athletic trainer Javier Jimenez believed in me more than I believed in my self at times.

What system fits your style of play the best?
I don’t have a “style” I just play “FOOTBALL.” That’s pretty much my style.

What is your biggest strength?
My versatility.

What is your biggest weakness?
break away speed.

If I were a GM and gave you a minute to sell yourself, what would you say?
I’m not good at selling my self with words but what I am good at is not settling. Everybody has a “why” that drives them. My “why” simply lies in my love for the sport! My “why” is also a dream and its not just to play in the NFL but it is to pay my aunt back for getting me to this point. By staying true to that last promise I made to her the last time I saw her and that was to never give up on what I love.

Growing up, who was your role model?
Growing up I was a sponge. Still am to be honest. If I had to choose I’d have to say my true role model as a kid was my oldest brother. He’s the reason I love the game so much.

Who was your favorite team and player in the NFL and why?
Never really had a favorite team but my favorite player has always been Ray Lewis.

If you were to have dinner with three people dead or alive who would it be?
My aunt Sonya, Ray Lewis, Michael Jordan

What would you buy with your first NFL paycheck?
Something for my mom and pops
