Richard Sherman is proof you can come out the hood and succeed

Compton was popularized in American media due to many hip hop groups and rappers originating from the community, such as the gangsta rap group N.W.A, who are best known for their debut album, Straight Outta Compton, and are widely considered one of the seminal acts of the gangsta rap sub-genre. The city of Compton as well as southern Los Angeles County in general is notorious for its heavy concentration of gangs and gang violence, such as the Bloods, the Crips, and Sureños, which all originated in the Los Angeles area.

Compton is the birthplace of Richard Sherman, the loud mouthed cornerback that has backed up everything he has said since his rookie year.  Sherman attended Dominguez High School in Compton, California, where he starred in football and track and field. In 2006 he led his team to a Championship win over Sherman Oaks Notre Dame 41-14. In his senior season he had an average of 30 yards per catch on 28 catches with 14 touchdowns.

The guy was a stand out wide receiver before getting a full ride to play at Stanford.  YES STANFORD, that is not an easy task especially from someone who was born is the so-called HOOD.

He switched to cornerback after his injury due to team need and made 112 tackles over his final two years, which also included 6 interceptions. He was part of the 2010 Stanford Cardinal football team which finished 12-1, a school record. Sherman graduated in 2010 from Stanford with a degree in Communication and returned for his final year of eligibility in order to begin a Masters degree.

When you look at Sherman you would think the guy is a prick, because of his aggressive nature and comments, but the guy is not stupid.  He has talked his way into play as the best cornerback in the NFL. Earlier this year he called out Darrelle Revis and told him that he was not good anymore, and he was old.

That talk from the communication graduate was huge, because it automatically made you start comparing the play of Sherman to Revis.  Revis has been known as the best cornerback over the past 5 years.  So when you begin to compare a former 5th round draft pick who has been playing very good, you just placed him in the same category.

This year Sherman has been impressive, and through 7 games, he has 22 tackles, 3 interceptions, and a touchdown, while his villain Revis has been super quiet in Tampa.  Revis has 21 tackles, 1 interception and 2 forced fumbles.  When you look at the stats, you see they are similar.  That is exactly what Sherman wanted to do for the media. We just compared the two, and he is equal to Revis’ level.

What Richard Sherman has done is impressive, while I love his trash talking, he has definitely walked the walk.  He is not just mouth people, he is the best cornerback in the National Football League.

Congrats Mr. Sherman, you have earned my respect. #StartedFromTheBottom
