Will the Patriots have the best secondary in the NFL?

The New England Patriots finished the season last year holding their opponents to 239 yards a game in the passing game, but finished 18th overall.  That was with Aqib Talib and other make shift corners, but when the team did not re-sign Talib, the fans began to panic a little.

I didn’t understand the panic, because if we have learned anything about Bill Belichick and the Patriots you need to u understand they are going to do what is necessary to land the best available players.  They did that this year when they went out and signed Darrelle Revis to a 2 year deal, and then locked down Brandon Browner the former Legend of Boom corner that hits harder than most safeties.

The Patriots understand that Tom Brady is not getting any younger, and if they want to win it all they are going to make a move.  They have solidified their secondary with solid players, and could have the best secondary in football. Rob Ninkovich agrees with the moves, and even stated how excited he is to have both Revis and Browner.  Ninkovich feels that the Patriots pass rush will be better with their new improved secondary.

“We have the best corner in the league coming in,” Ninkovich said Tuesday at Gillette Stadium about the addition of Revis. “That’s always a good thing for a defensive end like myself — give me a little more time. I’ll be happy to use that.

“You can do whatever you want with him. You can put him on the best receiver, tight end, whoever, and just say, ‘Go cover this guy,’ and he can do it. Whenever you have a guy who’s that talented, it’s always great, as far as defensive schemes and stuff like that.”

Ninkovich said that at this point in his career, and at his age, winning is still all that matters, however, and Revis will help the Patriots accomplish that overarching goal.

“The more great football players you have on your team, the better chance you have to win,” Ninkovich said. “Again, I’m happy he’s playing for us.”

Browner was another key addition to the Patriots’ defense, and Ninkovich was impressed with the size of the former Legend of Boom member.

“That guy is bigger than me,” Ninkovich said about Browner. “When I first met him, I didn’t know he was a corner. He’s big, physical guy,” Ninkovich said about Browner. “He’s tall and long. He’s another guy who is a piece you can put on the field anywhere to go cover a guy and shut them down.”

I have to agree with Ninkovich, if the Patriots can create pressure on their opponents they should have no problem winning the AFC East once again, and maybe making another run at the Super Bowl before Tom Brady hangs up his cleats.
