Why draft a quarterback in the first if your going to have him back up?

I don’t understand the NFL these days. I don’t understand why you would draft a quarterback in the first round if you’re planning on sitting him on the bench and allowing him to learn from a guy who’s not a great starter.

I understand teams do not want to throw the man to the wolves (so to speak), but sitting behind a bum how are they supposed to learn.

@AdamSchefter: Different approach with rookie QBs. Jags don’t want to play Bortles this year, Vikes not rushing Bridgewater, same with Raiders and Carr.

Adam Schefter of ESPN is reporting several teams are planning on benching their draft picks.
