Two Raiders players are hoping to follow in their fathers footsteps
The Oakland Raiders have two players on their roster that are fighting for a roster spot, who come from an amazing pedigree of football. Darrell Green the former Washington Redskins cornerback and George Atkinson Jr. who played with the Raiders himself, have sons trying to make the Oakland roster.
The younger Atkinson went undrafted despite a solid collegiate career at Notre Dame but was quickly snapped up by the Raiders, who signed him to a free agent contract soon after.
Now George Atkinson III is doing what he can to make the Raiders’ roster, using elite special teams skills taught to him by his father as the basis to get his foot in the door, according to CSN Bay Area.
Jared Green the former wide out from Southern University has all the speed in the world just like his father, but has been bouncing around the NFL hoping to find a home. The former Virginia product has always been a good wide out, but has never had the spot to shine. Oakland gives him a very good spot to make an impact on both Special Teams and at the wide receiver position.
Both their families would be happy, but Atkinson Jr., doesn’t want his son to feel this is about him, but rather his son and his hard work and dedication.
“He told me yesterday, ‘I’m not going to come out. I know you’re expecting me to come, but this is your moment and you need to be a man about it as an individual and I’m not going to be here to pressure you or anything like that.’” Atkinson III said. “He’ll have a chance to come out and see me practice.”
It will be interesting to see if both these guys make a roster. Both are very solid prospects and have practice squad eligibility.
