Former Bethune-Cookman and HBCU standout cornerback Rashean Mathis is the new starting cornerback in Detroit. Mathis unseated the 2013 draft pick Darius Slay after having a bumpy start to the season. Head Coach Jim Schwartz had great things to say about Slay but wanted to make sure that he had the best player on the field.
“Let me say this, Slay’s going to be an outstanding player,” Schwartz said. “We have all the confidence in the world in him, but as a rookie there’s just so many things he’s seeing for the first time. This was a very difficult game plan defensively because of the option. Like I said, you have to defend every inch of that field.
“We had a lot of adjustments, a lot of different thing, and Rashean has really been a valuable player for us and he stepped in and did a nice job.”
I was concerned about Slay and Banks at Mississippi State, and needless to say, I might be right about them. We shall see, but going forward the Lions have a way better player at corner right now.
