NFL Draft Diamonds Scouting Report: Mitchell Trubisky, QB, UNC

  • Mitch Trubisky, QB. North Carolina
  • Height: 6’2″
  • Weight: 222 lbs
  • Hometown: Mentor, OH

Pros: Great pocket awareness and presence, doesn’t allow pressure to control his game. Throwing mechanics are consistent. Great arm that can make all the throws you want. Goes through progressions and can come back to receivers he had looked at earlier. Puts the ball where the receiver can catch and run with it. Seems to have a grasp of what the defense is going to do and knows how to make it work in his advantage. Athletic and can hurt you outside the pocket. One of the most consistent passers in this draft class in numerous mechanic ways. Accuracy is one of his strongest suits.

Cons: Deep ball accuracy is iffy. Sometimes he hesitates when he should let it rip, which will result in defenders being able to recover. While he goes through progressions, he does sometimes stare down a receiver and force it to them. Will have to work on footwork technique from under center, also bounces a lot in the pocket. Doesn’t have much experience. Throws air balls sometimes when pressure gets to him or is closing in.

Overall: While there will be question marks due to him coming from a spread offense and not having much playing experience, Trubisky is still a very intriguing prospect and should be one of the first quarterbacks to be drafted. There’s a ton of upside with the guy and he’s been very consistent in college when it comes to throwing mechanics. It may take some time for him to get used to NFL defenses and footwork, but there’s a ton of potential with Trubisky and he could end up being a franchise quarterback for whichever team drafts him.
