Matt Schaub is a very solid quarterback that just had a bad year
I guess you are not able to have a bad season in the NFL, according to the entire NFL fan base…..
If you ask the football fans in the NFL, they will all tell you that the Oakland Raiders are in a horrible situation with Matt Schaub and that the team is not going to go in the right direction with him at quarterback, but I think differently.
I am not trying to sit here and defend the season that Matt Schaub had last year for the Texans, but I will say this Schaub is not as bad of a quarterback as you think he is.
We will now go to statistics to show just how productive Matt Schaub has been in the NFL, then we will compare it to the other quarterbacks in the NFL.
In his career Matt Schaub has thrown for 24,254 yards, 130 touchdowns and 84 interceptions in 10 years in the NFL. Remember he was not a starter for the first three years of his career with the Atlanta Falcons, and did not start until the 2007 season for the Houston Texans.
So those statistics are pretty impressive, especially when you take in that he had three seasons where he threw for 4,000 yards. While that stat might not be impressive, the Baltimore Ravens Super Bowl winning quarterback Joe Flacco has never had a 4000 yard season. Schaub has thrown for more than 3,000 yards in 4 of those 7 years as a starting quarterback.
Here is another stat for the football fans that know so much. Did you know that Eli Manning has a worse career quarterback rating lifetime than Matt Schaub? Eli has an 81.2 career quarterback rating while Schaub has an 89.8 career rating. While that might seem good, remember Eli has two Super Bowl rings in his tenure as the Giants starting quarterback.
Hey it’s ok though, because Matt Schaub threw 14 interceptions last year, and who knows how many were returned for a touchdown, you cannot overcome a bad season right? Well Philip Rivers would like to disagree with you. Back in 2007 Philip Rivers had a horrible season throwing 21 touchdowns and fifteen interceptions. His QBR rating was a 44.7. That is pretty bad, especially when you consider Schaub’s QBR last year was a 37.3 and he only played in 10 games, so that statistic could have been better or worse. The bigger question is how did Rivers rebound? Since 2007 he has thrown for 4000 plus yards 5 of 6 seasons. He also has not thrown less than 26 touchdowns each and everyone of those seasons.
I am not saying Matt Schaub will turn into a Hall of Fame quarterback, or saying he will be the savior for the Raiders, but let’s not dog him out and consider him a bust because of one season. Up until last year, Matt Schaub was known as a top tier quarterback in the NFL, and if he can return to that form, watch out football fans. The Raiders and Reggie McKenzie might look like one of the smartest teams in the NFL. They honestly do not have that many holes on their team, and with a solid draft they could easily be a playoff team.
