Lions felt Golden Tate was a better player than Eric Decker

Going into the off-season the Detroit Lions number one need in free agency was wide receiver. The two biggest wide receivers available were Eric Decker of the Denver Broncos and Golden Tate of the Seattle Seahawks. Many had Eric Decker is the best available wide receiver via free agency. Well one team didn’t feel that way.

The Lions signed Tate to a five-year, $31-million deal less than 24 hours into free agency, and coach Jim Caldwell said Thursday that Tate, not Decker, was his team’s No. 1 target on the open market.

“That’s taking me back a little while,” Caldwell said when asked if the Lions considered pursuing Decker. “There was a lot of things going on at that particular time. I can tell you that Golden was our prime target and we’re glad he’s here. Decker obviously is a fine football player and does a lot of things extremely well.”
