Draft Diamonds Spotlight Interview: Tyler Worthley, OG, Sacramento State

How many teams were recruiting you out of high school? In high school I was under the radar and although I got some attention from some schools, but was not offered by any schools.

How did you come to make your college decision?
My college decision was tough because I didn’t have many options. Sacramento State offered me a walk on spot so I had to decide whether to walk on or go to junior college. I decided to go play at sacramento state to earn a spot on the team.

Where are you training, and what are your goals for pro day/combines?
I am currently training at California Strength in San Ramon with Dave spitz in his combine prep program.
My goals for pro day is to run a sub 5.3 40 sub 4.7 short shuttle and a sub 7.7 3cone.

Have any scouts met with you, and if so what are they saying?
I haven’t met or spoken to any scouts at this time.

At your position, what separates you from the others?
What separates me from others at my position is my football intelligence and my footwork. I work diligently on mastering my technique and continuing to learn the game of football.

Tell us what you look for when breaking down film?
I look for tendencies and weaknesses that I can exploit. As an offensive linemen you have to anticipate what the defender is going to do and be ready for every possible move or scenario. I look at what his best pass rush move is? How does he play the run? Is he a penetrator or a read guy? How does he take on double teams? All of these and many more play a part in dominating the line of scrimmage and give me the best chance for success

Who was the toughest player you have ever faced?
I would have to say Will Sutton from Arizona State. He is a big defensive tackle with great quickness and great size. It was a great challenge for me and I enjoyed competing against him in the trenches.

If you could compare your play to one person in the NFL who would it be?
I’ve always been a niner fan and I would have to say mike iupati. He comes from a school not known for creating great NFL talent and is a physical offensive guard that moves well and has great feet.

What was the biggest obstacle in your life you had to overcome, and how did you overcome it?
I have been extremely fortunate to not have too many hardships in my life. If I would have to pick something I would say when I injured my foot the summer before my junior year of high school. I was being heavily recruited at the time and it was hard not being able to workout with my team and I feel it set me back in recruiting. I stayed positive through the whole process and came back strong. I did a lot of rehab and I havn’thad a problem with it since.

What system fits your style of play the best?
I am pretty versatile when it comes to this. I played in the pro system, pistol, and spread throughout my college career. I would have to say the pro system. Inside zone is one of my favorite plays along with power. The type of offense isn’t much of a concern for me I feel I can do well in any system.

What is your biggest strength?
My footwork is my biggest strength. I have great feet that are quick but at the same time powerful.

What is your biggest weakness?
I really need to work on maintaining blocks at the linebacker level and finishing them. I do well getting the second level but can be better maintaining those blocks longer.

If I were a GM and gave you a minute to sell yourself, what would you say?
I am a driven individual and I’m willing to do whatever it takes to succeed and help your organization. I am a team player and never settle for anything less than greatness. I possess the ability to make an impact at the next level and be dominate in the trenches.

Growing up, who was your role model?
I had two my father and my grandfather. They are great role models and have taught me so much growing up. Two people I can look up to and count on no matter what they are there for me.

Who was your favorite team and player in the NFL and why?
I am a 49er fan and my favorite player is Joe Staley. Staley is a great player and his freak athleticism is just fun to watch. Another thing I like about Staley is he protects his team and knows what it takes to do so.

If you were to have dinner with three people dead or alive who would it be?
What would you buy with your first NFL paycheck? The first thing I would do is help my parents out. They have been so supportive of me over the years and I would want to try and help them out. I want to invest my money because you never know how long your NFL career will last.
